SpecificFeeds is a free web app which allows you to provide the opportunity to your RSS readers to subscribe only to the type of news and stories they are interested into by allowing them to select tags, keywords and authors they want to read about. You simply submit your RSS feed to SpecificFeeds and the service automatically creates a web page and an icon that you can share or publish on your website to help those that want to subscribe to your news, but who prefer to pre-select topics, tags or authors they like to see. My comment: SpecificFeeds acts as a RSS filtering and distribution service providing a useful benefit to those using it. Just like on Twitter (until Custom Timelines) the fact that you subscribe to an author or a web magazine, doesn't mean you want to read everything she posts. SpecificFeeds helps both web publishers and readers reduce the noise and increase the signal when using RSS feeds. Free to use. A useful app for syndicating RSS content using tags, author or keywords. Fills a gap in the market for this type of functionality (not available in Feedburner) and nice to see that some people still see RSS as a viable means of consuming information.

Triggable is a new web abb (currently in alpha) which allows you to monitor mentions of specific people, events or topics across your favorite news and social media channels. You select your favorite sources both from within a pre-selected pool of quality news channels as well as by adding your favorite RSS feeds. Triggable collects relevant mentions, collects them and optionally alerts you via email. My comment: Interesting and promising alternative to the likes of Google and Yahoo Alerts (and Talkwalker Alerts), and to the new cool kid on the block: Mention. Free to use. Kwout is a web app that allows you to grab any portion of any web page, including text and images and to easily post it on your site, blog or on your preferred social media channel. To use Kwout you install a Firefox add-on or the Chrome extension and whenever you see content you want to "quote" you click the Kwout button and then you select the part of the page you want to quote with your mouse. At this point you can select whether to share, tweet or embed your selected quote whereever you like. A unique feature makes it possible for all of the links contained in the part of the page you grabbed to remain fully active and clickable. Kwout archives also all of the "quotes" you create and can auto-generate a page that shows your history of cited content. P.S.: This is not a new tool and it has not been updated since 2011 but it is still working fine. Free to use. Kwout es una aplicación web que te permite capturar cualquier parte de cualquier página web, incluyendo el texto y las imágenes y te permite publicarla fácilmente en tu sitio, blog o en su canal de medios sociales preferido. Para utilizar Kwout debes instalar un complemento o extensión de Firefox o Chrome y cada vez que veas algún contenido que deseas "citar" debes hacer clic en el botón "Kwout" y luego seleccionas la parte de la página que deseas capturar con el ratón. En este punto puedes seleccionar si deseas compartir, tweetear o si deseas integrar la cita seleccionada en el lugar que prefieras. Una característica única hace posible que todos los enlaces contenidos en la "captura" permanezcan en plena actividad y te lleven al lugar indicado al hacer clic. After Permamarks and Perma.cc have made their recent debut, there is a new free web service offering the ability to store, preserve and index any web page. Mummify.it it's very simple to use. You can either paste the URL of a web page that you want to be preserved or you can install the Mummify bookmarklet and click on it anytime you are on a web page that you want to archive forever "as is". Mummify creates a "permanent", in the cloud, non-movable and supposedly non-changeable link to the archived version of your selected page. (I say supposedly because of course no-one can really guarantee for the future of this company yet.) From then on you can share directly the mummified URL (or a shortened version of it), as, until the "original" is live and accessible online, it will point directly to it. Only if the "original" goes down, the mummified URL will re-direct automatically to the "preserved" copy. A free version allows you to archive up to 10 pages per month. The $10/mo plan allows for 25 and the $15/mo plan provides also analytics and alerts for when the "original" of any archived page goes down. My comment: Mummify represents an unstoppable and useful trend inherited by curation disciplines that have a much longer history than "content curation": preservation. Mummify.it, like its two predecessors is a useful tool, that will become even more appreciated when fully integrated (as Buffer does) into any professional content curation tool. Free for most. Way too often in fact, due to a multitude of reasons, not only content gets moved and relocated to new sites, becoming more difficult to find but in many others it is permanently deleted or lost. To comfort your doubts that this is a true and tangible issue, you should check the work being carried out by Kendra Albert, Larry Lessig and Jonathan Zittrain, who are completing a study of link rot, available at http://papers.ssrn.com/abstract=2329161. Link rot is the phenomenon by which material we link to on the distributed Web vanishes or changes beyond recognition over time. Believe it or not half of the links in all of the Supreme Court opinions, don't work anymore. Wibki does an excellent job of making it very easy to add and edit new sites to your visual start pages, and it automatically fetches the logo of each one. You can create as many "start pages" (or tabs) as you like, so that you can keep your favorite web sites organized into different thematic categories. @Robin Good As far as the links all you have to do is bookmark it to your bookmark bar and then navigate to teh tab page and drag that link (in your bookmark bar) to the page and it adds it. Not exactly straightforward but it is simple and works.

Feed2email.net is a useful free tool for anyone needing to track and monitor specific web sites or RSS feeds. Just provide any web site URL, or RSS feed url and an email address and Feed2email takes care of the rest. Without having to register, pay anything or login, it will automatically forward any updates of your favorite websites and RSS feeds into your email inbox. An extra useful option allows you to export all of your subscribed feeds / websites into an OPML file by simply replying to any email from Feed2mail with 'export' in the subject line and you'll get instantly an OPML file with all of your subscriptions which you can import in many dedicated RSS feed readers.

Google Tour Builder is a new web app which allows you to create visual stories that integrate maps, location pins, routes followed, texts, images and video clips into a shareable content bundle. You simply log in with your Google account into GTB and you can start immediately building a tour by identifying specific spots on the world map and by providing additional information to build your story. Completed tours (which are set to private by default) can be edited at any time and can be publicly shared and viewed by anyone with a web browser. N.B.: Currently, Tour Builder requires the Google Earth plugin which is only available for Windows and Mac OS X 10.6+. While tours can't be viewed on mobile browsers, they can be accessed using the Google Earth App, which is available for Android, iPhone/iPad, and Linux. Pinboard is a social bookmarking service which allows you to easily save and organize any number of links, with no limits on text descriptions. Pinboard is characterized by having a no-frills, simple interface, by being very speedy and reliable and by being able to import, sync and export all of your links easily. Pinboard integrates also a powerful web caching and indexing feature available to "pro" accounts ($25/year) which allows you to keep a full cached and searchable copy of any bookmark you save. Advanced edit tagging, filtering and bundling features make it easy to oganize and find links even inside very large collections. Links saved can be set to be public or private. All of the bookmarks saved inside Pinboard can be easily exported in a standard file format. A set of basic APIs is also available. You can import all your existing bookmarks from Delicious, Google Bookmarks, Diigo, Firefox, Safari, and many other sources by following the instructions on the howto page. A very useful feature called Tab Sets allows to quickly save all of your currently open browser tabs to Pinboard having the unique advantage of being able to re-open them even if you're on another machine or in a different browser. Nextly is a free web app which allows you to create collections of web pages that can be easily navigated as a tour on any device. Via the integrated Add Page feature or the accompanying bookmarklet you can add just about any web page to one of your collections, as well as content coming from Twitter, Facebook or RSS feeds and other social media. A unique characterizing feature of Nextly is that the content of a collection gets pre-loaded when accessed by a user, making the browsing through elements of the collection quite fast. When browsing through a Nextly collection all original web pages are reproduced as they appear on the web, and are rapidly pre-fecthed to provide a faster loading experience. Huzzaz is a new free video curation web service which allows you to search, find, collect and publish video clip collections on whataver topic or theme you may be interested in. An internal search engine makes it easy to search for clips across YouTube and Vimeo, and to add them selectively to one of your collections. A bookmarklet is also available to clip videos that you find while surfing. Video collections can be easily shared on social media or embedded easily on WordPress, Tumblr or on any other web site. According to the site, they have the ability to strip the ads off the videos you put on your lists. Makes me wonder how YouTube and Vimeo will react once they realize they aren't getting ad-views. And if there are no ad-views, how the makers will feel about the loss of revenue? The founder is James Yang. Grazie a un motore di ricerca è semplice trovere clip su Uoytube e Vimeo e aggiungerle a una delle nsotre collezioni. Grazie a un bookmarklet è anche possibile aggiungere immediatamente contenuti video che troviamo durante la navigazione.
Le collezioni video realizzate possono essere facilmente condivise nei principali social network o incorporate.

Zeef is a new web service which allows you to create top link lists on any topic and to group them into useful resources pages. Each Zeef page contains multiple link blocks, which you can edit and customize to cover different set of resources for your selected topic. Not only you can simply add a URL and have it instantly added to a link block, but you can also search Google inline, see all the relevant results, and flag all the relevant ones for instant import into any link block. Link items can be easily dragged and dropped in different positions, and link blogs can be also be easily repositioned on the page in your preferred order. Text blocks can also be created, to create information modules in which you provide textual information only. These link lists can then be shared and embedded on other sites, and have been designed to behave in a fashion similar to Google AdSense ad blocks. More specifically: link block content would be triggered by the page context and link blocks can carry affiliate or commercial links. Finally, a supercool feature allows you to import any web site site structure into Zeef, and to have it auto-organized into link blocks, which you can further edit and arrange as you wish. Powerful. My comment: Useful tools need not be very complicated. Zeef is a very simple but extremely useful tool as it leverages true experts in competition among themselves (there can be more than one page and more than expert for any topic) and crowdsourced metrics (what people click on) to provide highly curated selections of the best resources on any possible topic. Zeef is excellent for: a) experts wanting to share and showcase their competence in specific sectors while providing a useful service b) bloggers wanting to enrich the value of their content by providing contextually relevant top-ten link lists c) companies / advertisers desiring to leverage this tool to provide a highly effective access map to their best content, offers, info and services. This short info, even within 144 characters, could provide a lot of additional value to the already useful link blocks. Hi, indeed this is a risk, we will offer this download this is very good feedback. But there are not many curated directories with a real business model. Because we are going to use the links blocks on external websites (blogs) like widgets and fill them with affiliate links we give people the opportunity to make money. Most curation websites don't have any way of monetizing their traffic. Our business model is based on a dutch competitor how does 20 million of revenue only in the dutch (Netherlands) market. So if people use your subject page to make their purchasing decision you have helped them and earn some money to keep the platform alive.

Brian, white labeling is on our roadmap, but not yet implemented, what type of features would you like to see?

Zeef è una applicazione web che genera categorie e sarebbe piaciuta molto ad Aristotele e a Kant.
Il suo utilizzo è semplicissimo, basta indicare il nome della nostra collezione di Link, dedicata a uno specifico tema, e quindi procedere a creare, all'interno di quel tema e argomento delle categorie, che sono rese graficamente come blocchi di liste di indirizzi. Aggiungere ai blocchi nuovi indirizzi è altrettanto semplice, basta copiare e incollare l'URL del sito o della risorsa che ci interessa.
I blocchi possono essere collocati nell'ordine che preferiamo semplicemente trascinandoli con il mouse nella posizione che più ci piace ed è sempre possibile aggiungere nuovi blocchi.
Le liste di Link possono essere condivise e incorporate in altri siti. L'utilizo di questo servizio web è gratuito previa registrazione.
Si tratta di unos trumento utilissimo per organizzare i propri indirizzi in relazione a un tema/argomento specifico in modo da disporre di un archivio specifico, disponibile online, cui poter sempre fare riferimento.
Le applicazioni didattiche sono numerose: 1. creare archivi ordinati di risorse web su arogmenti disciplinari o transdisciplinari 2. far realizzare tali archivi dagli studenti in modo da abituarli alla ricerca delle fonti sul web 3. realizzare raccolte di risorse per l'apprendimento di una disciplina o di argomenti di una disciplina da utilizzare in ambito blended learning o flipped learning 4. Si possono creare raccolte, stile top ten, di risorse rilevanti su un dato argomento per arricchire il processo di insegnamento/apprendimento

As usual, Robin Good is tracking the cutting edge in info-discovery. In addition to RSS feeds of persistent news searches and other kinds of searches and social media monitoring services like talkwalker.com, Ping.it looks like a potentially useful infotention tool (off to test it...)

If you use Chrome, you can collect several open tabs at once with this extension -- great way to save your place if you have to quite while in the middle of researching something, but also a good way to package disparate sources of information together. |
Siz.io is a free web app which allows you to collect your favorite video clips into thematic "shortlists".
Shortlists are organized into main categories ranging from News, to Animals, Games, Funny, Cinema, TV and more.
You can add video clips from YouTube, Vimeo, DailyMotion, Instagram, Vines and more by simply copying and pasting their URLs.
My comment: Good resource to find shortlists of curious, funny and entertaining videos. Easy-to-use. Feature request: play all clips in a shortlist as a back-to-back sequence.
