Curate Your Favorite Vine and Instagram Clips Into Video Shortlists with Siz.io

Curate Your Favorite Vine and Instagram Clips Into Video Shortlists with Siz.io | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Robin Good's insight:

Siz.io is a free web app which allows you to collect your favorite video clips into thematic "shortlists".

Shortlists are organized into main categories ranging from News, to Animals, Games, Funny, Cinema, TV and more.

You can add video clips from YouTube, Vimeo, DailyMotion, Instagram, Vines and more by simply copying and pasting their URLs.

My comment: Good resource to find shortlists of curious, funny and entertaining videos. Easy-to-use. Feature request: play all clips in a shortlist as a back-to-back sequence.

Let Your Readers Select What They Want To Get From Your RSS Feed with SpecificFeeds

Robin Good's insight:

SpecificFeeds is a free web app which allows you to provide the opportunity to your RSS readers to subscribe only to the type of news and stories they are interested into by allowing them to select tags, keywords and authors they want to read about.

You simply submit your RSS feed to SpecificFeeds and the service automatically creates a web page and an icon that you can share or publish on your website to help those that want to subscribe to your news, but who prefer to pre-select topics, tags or authors they like to see.

My comment: SpecificFeeds acts as a RSS filtering and distribution service providing a useful benefit to those using it. Just like on Twitter (until Custom Timelines) the fact that you subscribe to an author or a web magazine, doesn't mean you want to read everything she posts. SpecificFeeds helps both web publishers and readers reduce the noise and increase the signal when using RSS feeds.

Free to use.

A useful app for syndicating RSS content using tags, author or keywords. Fills a gap in the market for this type of functionality (not available in Feedburner) and nice to see that some people still see RSS as a viable means of consuming information.

Triggable is a new web abb (currently in alpha) which allows you to monitor mentions of specific people, events or topics across your favorite news and social media channels.

You select your favorite sources both from within a pre-selected pool of quality news channels as well as by adding your favorite RSS feeds.

Triggable collects relevant mentions, collects them and optionally alerts you via email.

My comment: Interesting and promising alternative to the likes of Google and Yahoo Alerts (and Talkwalker Alerts), and to the new cool kid on the block: Mention

Capture Any Portion of Any Web Page and Post/Embed It Anywhere with Kwout

Capture Any Portion of Any Web Page and Post/Embed It Anywhere with Kwout | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
A brilliant way to quote
Robin Good's insight:

Kwout is a web app that allows you to grab any portion of any web page, including text and images and to easily post it on your site, blog or on your preferred social media channel.

To use Kwout you install a Firefox add-on or the Chrome extension and whenever you see content you want to "quote" you click the Kwout button and then you select the part of the page you want to quote with your mouse.

At this point you can select whether to share, tweet or embed your selected quote whereever you like. A unique feature makes it possible for all of the links contained in the part of the page you grabbed to remain fully active and clickable.

Kwout archives also all of the "quotes" you create and can auto-generate a page that shows your history of cited content.

P.S.: This is not a new tool and it has not been updated since 2011 but it is still working fine.

Free to use.

Preservation: Make a Permanent Archive Copy of Any Webpage with Mummify.it

Preservation: Make a Permanent Archive Copy of Any Webpage with Mummify.it | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Robin Good's insight:

After Permamarks and Perma.cc have made their recent debut, there is a new free web service offering the ability to store, preserve and index any web page.

Mummify.it it's very simple to use. You can either paste the URL of a web page that you want to be preserved or you can install the Mummify bookmarklet and click on it anytime you are on a web page that you want to archive forever "as is".

Mummify creates a "permanent", in the cloud, non-movable and supposedly non-changeable link to the archived version of your selected page. (I say supposedly because of course no-one can really guarantee for the future of this company yet.)

From then on you can share directly the mummified URL (or a shortened version of it), as, until the "original" is live and accessible online, it will point directly to it. Only if the "original" goes down, the mummified URL will re-direct automatically to the "preserved" copy.

A free version allows you to archive up to 10 pages per month. The $10/mo plan allows for 25 and the $15/mo plan provides also analytics and alerts for when the "original" of any archived page goes down.

My comment: Mummify represents an unstoppable and useful trend inherited by curation disciplines that have a much longer history than "content curation": preservation. Mummify.it, like its two predecessors is a useful tool, that will become even more appreciated when fully integrated (as Buffer does) into any professional content curation tool.

Free for most.

When you Mummify a webpage—a news article, blog post, photo or tweet, for example— we make a permanent copy and back it up in the cloud. We then give you a new URL that looks like this: http://mummify.it/2452862

Mummify is free up to 100 mummies a month. If you need to Mummify more than 100 pages in a given month you can purchase 50 more for $5.

Permanent Archival of Author Content Soon Possible Thanks To Harvard Perma.cc

Permanent Archival of Author Content Soon Possible Thanks To Harvard Perma.cc | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Broken links are everywhere. Perma helps authors and journals create permanent links for citations in their published work.
Robin Good's insight:

Perma.cc is an upcoming web service that aims to help authors and journals create permanent archival copies of their online published content.

Way too often in fact, due to a multitude of reasons, not only content gets moved and relocated to new sites, becoming more difficult to find but in many others it is permanently deleted or lost.

To comfort your doubts that this is a true and tangible issue, you should check the work being carried out by Kendra AlbertLarry Lessig and Jonathan Zittrain, who are completing a study of link rot, available at http://papers.ssrn.com/abstract=2329161

Link rot is the phenomenon by which material we link to on the distributed Web vanishes or changes beyond recognition over time.

Believe it or not half of the links in all of the Supreme Court opinions, don't work anymore.

In this context "the Harvard Library Innovation Lab has pioneered a project to unite libraries so that link rot can be mitigated.  We are joined by about thirty law libraries around the world to start Perma.cc, which will allow those libraries on direction of authors and journal editors to store permanent caches of otherwise ephemeral links."

The Internet Archive has provided its powerful archiving engine to support this effort and Cloudfare its distributed CDN.

The official tagline of the upcoming site reads: "perma.cc helps authors and journals create permanent archived citations in their published work"

Here is essence what you should expect from it: "Perma.cc allows users to create citation links that will never break.

When a user creates a Perma.cc link, Perma.cc archives a copy of the referenced content, and generates a link to an unalterable hosted instance of the site.

Regardless of what may happen to the original source, if the link is later published by a journal using the Perma.cc service, the archived version will always be available through the Perma.cc link."

N.B.: While anyone will be able to go to Perma.cc and archive any web page this resource is designed for researchers, authors and journals. In this light Perma.cc downloads the material at the designated URL and provides a new URL (a “Perma.cc link”) that can then be inserted in a paper.

After the paper has been submitted to a journal, the journal staff checks that the provided Perma.cc link actually represents the cited material. If it does, the staff “vests” the link and it is forever preserved. Links that are not “vested” will be preserved for two years, at which point the author will have the option to renew the link for another two years.

My comment: Can't wait to test it. We need these type of archival tools like oxygen. It's not only important that we organize and curate what is important from the web, but it is essential that we also take care in preserving it for the longest possible time.

Curate Your Favorite Web Destinations Visually with Wibki

Robin Good's insight:

Wibki is a free web app which allows you to easily organize a series of visual "start pages" from which to access your favorite web sites, resources and apps.

Wibki does an excellent job of making it very easy to add and edit new sites to your visual start pages, and it automatically fetches the logo of each one.

You can create as many "start pages" (or tabs) as you like, so that you can keep your favorite web sites organized into different thematic categories. Individual cells can be easily edited, removed or dragged nto different positions.

My comments: An excellent tool to keep and organize in a handy way your favorite web sites. The web site icons and the simple and clean organization make this apparently simple visual bookmarking tool a very effective start page builder and web destinations manager.

Pinboard integrates also a powerful web caching and indexing feature available to "pro" accounts ($25/year) which allows you to keep a full cached and searchable copy of any bookmark you save.

Advanced edit tagging, filtering and bundling features make it easy to oganize and find links even inside very large collections.

Links saved can be set to be public or private.

All of the bookmarks saved inside Pinboard can be easily exported in a standard file format. A set of basic APIs is also available.

You can import all your existing bookmarks from Delicious, Google Bookmarks, Diigo, Firefox, Safari, and many other sources by following the instructions on the howto page.

A very useful feature called Tab Sets allows to quickly save all of your currently open browser tabs to Pinboard having the unique advantage of being able to re-open them even if you're on another machine or in a different browser.

Create Curated Expert-Filtered Top Link Lists and Categorized "Best Of" Pages with ZEEF

Create Curated Expert-Filtered Top Link Lists and Categorized "Best Of" Pages with ZEEF | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Robin Good's insight:

Zeef is a new web service which allows you to create top link lists on any topic and to group them into useful resources pages.

Each Zeef page contains multiple link blocks, which you can edit and customize to cover different set of resources for your selected topic. Not only you can simply add a URL and have it instantly added to a link block, but you can also search Google inline, see all the relevant results, and flag all the relevant ones for instant import into any link block.

Link items can be easily dragged and dropped in different positions, and link blogs can be also be easily repositioned on the page in your preferred order.

Text blocks can also be created, to create information modules in which you provide textual information only.

These link lists can then be shared and embedded on other sites, and have been designed to behave in a fashion similar to Google AdSense ad blocks. More specifically: link block content would be triggered by the page context and link blocks can carry affiliate or commercial links.

Finally, a supercool feature allows you to import any web site site structure into Zeef, and to have it auto-organized into link blocks, which you can further edit and arrange as you wish. Powerful.

My comment: Useful tools need not be very complicated. Zeef is a very simple but extremely useful tool as it leverages true experts in competition among themselves (there can be more than one page and more than expert for any topic) and crowdsourced metrics (what people click on) to provide highly curated selections of the best resources on any possible topic.

Zeef is excellent for:

a) experts wanting to share and showcase their competence in specific sectors while providing a useful service

b) bloggers wanting to enrich the value of their content by providing contextually relevant top-ten link lists

c) companies / advertisers desiring to leverage this tool to provide a highly effective access map to their best content, offers, info and services. See: http://apple.zeef.com

d) affiliate marketers and affiliate networks desiring to select categories / lists of links rated by experts and wanting to place them on their pages

I highly recommend using Zeef to rapidly organize the best resources on any topic in an effective, useful fashion.

The only addition I'd make to Zeef, would be an optional description-opinion one-liner that an expert can associate to each link he provides. This short info, even within 144 characters, could provide a lot of additional value to the already useful link blocks.

I sincerely hope that the commercial / revenue-making component of Zeef doesn't corrupt on otherwise very promising tool.

Free to use.

Hi, indeed this is a risk, we will offer this download this is very good feedback. But there are not many curated directories with a real business model. Because we are going to use the links blocks on external websites (blogs) like widgets and fill them with affiliate links we give people the opportunity to make money. Most curation websites don't have any way of monetizing their traffic. Our business model is based on a dutch competitor how does 20 million of revenue only in the dutch (Netherlands) market. So if people use your subject page to make their purchasing decision you have helped them and earn some money to keep the platform alive.

Brian, white labeling is on our roadmap, but not yet implemented, what type of features would you like to see?
Gianfranco Marini's curator insight, November 4, 2013 1:06 PM

News Discovery: Track Any Topic Online with Ping.it Keyword Probes | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Robin Good's insight:

Ping.it (review), a web app which allows you to monitor and discover relevant news in your areas of interest, has just introduced a new powerful feature with makes it possible to track any relevant content being published around a specific keyword.

Just specify the set of keywords or keyphrase you want to track, and almost instantly Ping.it provides you with a preview of relevant content items.

Probes can be tailored to your specific needs, by applying specific search parameters and social popularity filters. It is also possible to exclude specific keywords.

I find Ping.it and its keyword monitoring facility very effective and capable of bringing me only high quality results in my field of interest. I would not hesitate to recommend it to those who need to seriously monitor any topic.

As usual, Robin Good is tracking the cutting edge in info-discovery. In addition to RSS feeds of persistent news searches and other kinds of searches and social media monitoring services like talkwalker.com, Ping.it looks like a potentially useful infotention tool (off to test it...)

Curate All Your Open Browser Tabs with the Collectably Chrome Extension

Robin Good's insight:

Collectably is a content curation web app which allows you to bookmark any web site and to organize it into visual collections. A unique Chrome extension makes Collectably particularly useful as it pioneers the ability to save all of your open tabs into a visual collection that you can immediately prune, organize visually and sub-divide into specific groups.

This feature by itself is worth gold for any serious researcher or content curator as it allows to easily move from seeing just trees into seeing the whole forest and into organizing into logical groups for further work. Priceless.

If you frequently search and explore new information and tools online, I highly recommend it. It's that good.

Free to use.

Chrome extension and Bookmarklet: http://collectably.com/#/tools

N.B.: You have by default a similar functionality available inside Firefox. It is called Group Tabs and you can activate it by goign to the View menu -> Toolbars -> Customize and by dragging the mosaic looking Tab Group icon into your browser top bar.

Try it. It's excellent. The only difference with Collectably is that Group Tabs are private to you and not shareable on the web.

Lila Hanft's curator insight, August 24, 2013 7:19 PM

If you use Chrome, you can collect several open tabs at once with this extension -- great way to save your place if you have to quite while in the middle of researching something, but also a good way to package disparate sources of information together.
