The Key Added Value a Content Curator Can Provide: His Time

The Key Added Value a Content Curator Can Provide: His Time | Content Curation World | Scoop.it

"I still have to do all the searching for new and good content sources and filtering the content I get. Separating the crap from the awesome. All by myself. This is hard work and very time consuming"

Robin Good's insight:

If you are into content curation for the long run, do not make this mistake.

Nuno Figueroa, who shared, in an interesting and informative article on Business2Community, his deep frustration with content curation tools and with the incredible amount of work one has to do to find, vet, add value and share truly valuable content online, wrote
:

"I still have to do all the searching for new and good content sources and filtering the content I get. Separating the crap from the awesome. All by myself. This is hard work and very time consuming".

But wait a minute! What you describe here is the key, absolute value a curator can provide: his time.

The more we try to bypass this in favour of tools that can automate this time-consuming and difficult work the more we give up the opportunity to truly add unique value to your curated content.

Not to say that a good curator should not have a great toolset to help him out.

But remember: There will never be any tool that can do better search than you (unless you know nothing about what you are curating). No tool that can tell whether an article is a retake of another one or a true original, or that can evaluate the insight and ideas a new perspective from a new author unknown author can bring.

This in my opinion is what a content curator does.

Would a painter or a sculptor want to automate or speed up parts of his artistic creation process?

Unless the artist goal was focused exclusively on quantity and he had no enjoyment in the creation process there would be no need or desire to speed up or automate the creation process as this is what the artist, by definition, has chosen to do.

Similarly the content curator is socially useful and provides value to other people by utilising his many skills and experiences to gather, find, collect, organise, add value and present information artifacts covering a specific topic, interest, issue or event. His realisation is in doing such things not in bypassing or speeding up these steps.

This is one of the consequences of selling content curation as a content marketing "device" that can save time and make you look good.

If you are after *volume* and *eyeballs* you will publish funny cats.

But volume and traffic will not command much more than increasingly slimming advertising budgets. And for how long more?

What we should be all after his instead learning and refining those curatorial skills that can help us provide the only thing our readers care about: having truly trusted guides that provide high-value information services for the specific interests they have.

Yes, a content curator will also use, test and experiment with many different tools to aid its ability to search, find, collect and organise information, but definitely not in order to save time but in order to enhance and expand his abilities to provide greater value through those activities.

What do you think?

Dorlee Michaeli's curator insight, November 24, 2015 9:07 PM

Robin Good wisely notes that the added value a curator brings to the table is his/her time, the judgment of whether the particular article(s) are of value and what items to highlight.

Jeff Domansky's comment, August 3, 2016 2:30 AM
Robin, my view is that better tools help us be better curators. Finding higher quality content faster allows more quality time for curators to add more valuable insight. I welcome better time-saving tools. Cheers!
Robin Good's comment, August 3, 2016 5:00 AM
Jeff: Like if we got a better Photoshop we could do better images. The talent is not in the tools, but in our heads. Tools can help, but they can't make you do better work than what you are capable of. Practice is what does it. My two cents.

Stephen Dale's curator insight, December 19, 2013 3:51 AM

A useful summary of the current shortcomings in content curation tools and services, and what we features and innovations we might see in this developing market. From the author:

"In the near future it is likely that new content curation tools will provide more dedicated features for specific application and uses while becoming more aware of user needs that so far have not been taken into serious consideration (attribution, archiving, monetizing).

While large content curation hubs and platforms are likely to start realizing that their best value yet to be extracted is in the content being curated by their users, new tools will likely target more specific and professional uses rather than the general public needing simply to collect and repost content on their blog or social media channel."

Content Curation Tools Buyer's Guide: 21 Criteria To Identify Your Ideal One

Content Curation Tools Buyer's Guide: 21 Criteria To Identify Your Ideal One | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Nonetheless we are just at the beginning of a new era, in which content curation will be as important as search, there is already an apparent abundance of content curation tools of all kinds.
Robin Good's insight:

Evaluating which content curation tool to use may not be such an easy task. As you probably know there are literally hundreds of content curation tools out there, and many seem to be just clones of each other, leaving the novice curator in doubt as to what are the real differences between each one.

A good starting point to select anything is to know well what you are looking for and what you need it for, as your needs and objectives will shape the features and traits that your ideal tool will need to have.

In this article I have tried to simplify this job for you by listing 21 different things you may need your content curation tool to do, that you can use to check and compare the curation tools you have pre-identified.

For each selection criteria I have also added a few specific questions that should help you make even more sense of what you need to look for.

Content Curation Tools: The Organized Supermap of Over 400 Services

Content Curation Tools: The Organized Supermap of Over 400 Services | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Robin Good's insight:

If you are looking for your ideal content curation toolkit here is my new completely updated supermap, listing in over 30 categories all of the tools and services you may need to curate any content, from video to news.

This new supermap includes all of the tools and services that were already listed on NewsMaster Toolkit, with the addition of 25 new tools and with a much better organization of categories and labels.

My choice for organizing and recreating this supermap has now fallen on Pearltrees, the only content curation tool that can easily handle most of my key requirements for such a large collection of tools.

Nonetheless there are over 400 tools listed in this supermap, Pearltrees makes it a breeze to navigate through them, and to add new ones to the relevant branches.

The supermap is now being updated daily.

P.S.: I already feel the need for having a PRO account, which could allow me to further edit the pearls collected, to preserve original web pages saved, and to add images to pearls that weren't able to capture one from the web.

Enjoy the new supermap here: http://bit.ly/ContentCurationToolsSupermap

Try it out and let me know what you think.

(*and if you think I am missing some tools or can improve with my taxonomy, feel free to send me in your suggestions!)

Looking for Content Curation Tools? Here's Where To Start: The Official Content Curation Tools Universe Map

Looking for Content Curation Tools? Here's Where To Start: The Official Content Curation Tools Universe Map | Content Curation World | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Everytime I see a new post or article claiming to list the best content curation tools I know I am in for some disappointment.

Most of these lists just pick up names from other lists without even bothering to check, test or verify what these tools actually do, whether they are still available. Unfortunately the rush to put out "curated" list of tools and services has created more misinformation than useful lists.

But if you, like me, are on the lookout for new and effective tools to curate your own content or the one of your customers, I have created a comprehensive map of all the curation tools available online and I keep it fresh and updated almost on a daily basis.

The map presently lists over 250 content curation tools which you can navigate much more easily than it was possible on my earlier versions of this map.

On the right side of the map you will find all of the news and content curation tools available online today. On the left side, you can find bookmarking, link lists builders, clippers and lots of tools to operate with RSS feeds (which are still at the heart of a curator's job).
