The Art of Discovering Pearls Inside the Sand: How, Tools and Skills Advice from Beth Kanter

The Art of Discovering Pearls Inside the Sand: How, Tools and Skills Advice from Beth Kanter | Content Curation World | Scoop.it

Content curation - the process of finding, organizing, and  sharing topical, relevant content for your audience that supports your nonprofit's engagement or campaign goals (or your professional learning) begins with "Spotting the Awesome."

Robin Good's insight:

A good introductory article to content curation for organizations and non-profits. It provides good description of the purpose of content curation and of tools and key skills required.

Beth Kanter, provides lots of good resources, tools and other articles which kindly highlight and link also some of my recent content curation work.

Resourceful, informative, to-the-point. 8/10

Thanks for scooping the post - and modeling good content curation skills ...

1.) changed headline (way better than the original)
2.) Photo to illustrate headline
3.) Summarized the key points
4.) Added additional links from the source
5.) Shared it through channels

Thank you Beth, hehe. It was meant to be "in the ocean", but then I found that great picture and decided to move onto "sand".

Thank you so much for referencing my work and for highlighting, as we all must learn to do more often, the good stuff you found in it.

I like this.

Long ago, in a former life, I used to get newspaper articles passed to me each day that were relevant to my job and/or my aspirations. I would take the necessary hour or so each day to remain current with world affairs related to what I did or where I wanted to go.

Curation is a lot like that except it is more global in concept.

This article talks about how to do this in the best way.

The Key Benefits of Content Curation by Beth Kanter: Presentation + Curated Tweets

Robin Good: Here is the official presentation that Beth Kanter delivered yesterday, accompanied by a curated bundle of user contributions (mostly tweets) and relevant resources (stats, some visuals and other resources) outlining the key benefits that content curation can bring.

To do so, she used Storify.com which allowed her to pull in the most relevant and interesting tweets that had been posted during her webinar, as well as other relevant resources on the topics she covered.

My three picks from this Storify bundle:

- Mindless sharing is not content curation (Dara Goldberg)

- RT @ntenorg: Good content curators don't just share or collect links, they explain & make sense of a particular topic for others. (Steve Heye)

- ...@hjarche Seek-Sense-Share (PKM) model, he offers an online workshop bit.ly/HPV07M

Robin thanks so much for highlighting the storify summary - I did that right after the session because I wanted to do a quick content analysis of the tweets and see what resonated. I also did the same for the chat logs so I could gather up the questions and make sure they were answered. The session was based on an article I wrote recently on why content curation - real content curation as you describe it - can benefit nonprofits. How it can enhance staff expertise and reduce information overload. Here's a blog post that wrote sharing some of the other resources, including many of yours. http://www.bethkanter.org/?p=5690

Content Curation for NGOs: Where's The Value?

Robin Good's insight:

If you are a NGO or a non-profit organization, your reference point for anything that relates to effective communication online should be Beth Kanter

In the presentation / discussion she facilitated yesterday in San Francisco she illustrated the why, how and the key benefits that content curation can bring to any organization.

She writes: "Content curation can empower us to learn more and use that knowledge to get deeper impact for our nonprofit’s programs.

We can no longer afford to get distracted by the volume of information flying past us.
"

In this article she published before the event, you can find some valuable indications of how true "value" can be added to your content by adopting a "curating" perspective and what are the type of questions you should be considering to evaluate in a critical fashion the content you produce or curate.

Beth, that's wonderful and very useful. Thank you so much for including me in your slideshow, article and presentation, I am very honored by it. Thanks also for sharing this valuable piece of reference and for having shared the collaborative approach you have chosen during the workshop to motivate people to think more and deeper about their own curation. Thank you.

This is an excellent visual explanation of content curation, the goals, and the content curation process.
