News defined by you.
Robin Good's insight:

Defcomb is a new interesting web app, which while in full development, already offers some valuable features for anyone interested in monitoring and analyzing specific topics.

The app, which is fully free as of now, allows you to:

1) Add your selected RSS feeds, OPML file or to tap in Defcomb extensive global archive of feeds to determine your content sources.

2) Determine keyword-based filters by grouping multiple keywords

into sets.

3) Generate a news feed from your selected content sources filtered by anyone of your keyword sets or their combinations.

4) Publish a public RSS feed for each one of your news feeds.

5) Visualise occurrences of your specified set of keywords inside your sources across time

Applications for this tool may include personalised news and content discovery, topic tracking, text mining and data-visualisation.

N.B.: For novices, watch out. This tool is not difficult to use, but it may not so intuitive the first time around. Best thing to do to avoid wasting any time is to watch the short screencast video available on the home page (is video-only, no audio) and to read this short tutorial:

Great potential. Already useful. 8/10

Free to use.

Update: Due to the high number of requests free signups have been temporarily closed.

News Curation - Back To The Future [2006]: Marshall Kirkpatrick and the Human News Aggregator Interview [mp3]

Robin Good: Digging back into my article archives I have just run into a special gem, dating back to 2006.

Thanks to the curious and entrepreneurial spirit of Marshall Kirkpatrick, in this short audio interview (6':21"), I get to explain what was my vision then (six years ago) for what we now call "news curation".

Missing any better term for something that had no previous history of practice, at the time I had labelled "newsmaster" the news-curator professional, and "newsradar" the final output (a finely-tuned thematic news channel bringing you the best from many different sources).

The interview had been done for the web magazine NetSquared and you can find more info about this and a full transcription of the interview right here: http://www.masternewmedia.org/news/2006/05/24/the_human_news_aggregator_an.htm

Let me know what you think.

Update: Right after I had posted this short story, I went to check a bit how my old friend Marshall Kirkpatrick, author of the above interview, was doing, and headed to his blog... and what I discovered left me startled and enthusiastic at the same time. Read it by yourself: http://marshallk.com/were-entering-a-golden-age-of-news-geekery

Isn't the world amazing?

Robin, that is too funny that we were both thinking of that old interview! I still love your vision from back then of curation specialists inside companies. Hope you're well, old friend!
Robin Good's comment, August 5, 2012 2:13 PM
Hi Marshall, great to hear from you! Yes, we seem to be still in sync after all these years and for good reasons too.

I am well and I wish you all the best in what you are doing! Keep it up.

Automatically Generate Topic-Specific Social Newsradars with Kuratur

Automatically Generate Topic-Specific Social Newsradars with Kuratur | Content Curation World | Scoop.it

Robin Good's insight:

Kurator is a web service which allows you to easily customize one or more visual magazines that automatically aggregate the hashtags, lists, Twitter users, Facebook pages and RSS feeds you specify.

Specifically, you can aggregate from the following sources:

  • Twitter User
  • Twitter List
  • Twitter Keywords
  • Twitter Hastags
  • Twitter Mentions
  • Twitter Top Followers
  • Facebook Page
  • Facebook Keywords
  • RSS Feed

You can also filter and specify specific keywords that you want to be included/excluded.

Kurators offers the ability to title each stream, and to customize somewhat the look of the final magazine by providing a few templates and layouts and access to the controls to adjust the font style, size and color.

The final stream can be published as a web page on Kurator or exported directly to WordPress as a "page".

My comments: Kurator is a useful tool to rapidly aggregate and publish one or more streams on a specific topic and to be able to integrate this content stream into their WordPress sites.

Unless you are a graphic designer or a tech person it is hard to customize and improve on the ready-made look presently available.

Kurator offers no option to manually curate your final stream and it is almost inevitable with this approach to get some duplicate items and some outright spam.

Good for anyone needing to rapidly create one or more rich-content pages on one or more specific topics.

The difficult, curation work here is all in setting up effective filters to aggregate the valuable content you are looking for. Easier said than done.

Free to use.

Still need to explore this properly, but at face value it promises to be a powerful magazine-style curation tool.

AS Roma Curates Its News Stream With Shareist | Content Curation World | Scoop.it

Robin Good: I was both surprised and happy to discover minutes ago that the news AS Roma site (my favorite soccer team), has also a curated news stream.

Check it out: http://www.asroma.it/en/news/surfing_the_web.html

The newsroom picks and selects the best and most interesting news on the team from many different Italian sport magazines, newspapers and blogs while publishing them in this curated newsradar.

The news curation is done with Shareist, one of the easy-to-use and most approachable free curation tools out there.

My compliments to the AS Roma digital marketing team for their choice and for the numerous new innovations they are bringing to the AS Roma web site.

I look forward to see curated news channels like this take a greater and more central role in the editorial services provided by sport fan sites like this.
