How To Curate Content Without Breaking the Rules or Risking of Being Penalized

How To Curate Content Without Breaking the Rules or Risking of Being Penalized | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Google has introduced its new algorithm, Panda 4.0, in an effort to reward high quality, original content in the search engine's rankings. But, this doesn't mean marketers should stop curating
Robin Good's insight:

Pawan Deshpande of Curata offers a very good guide for content marketers fascinated by content curation opportunities but doubtful about the risks deriving from duplicating existing content or copying excerpts or titles from published articles.

The article provides good advice relative to SEO, general approach and strategy, managing Google search and G+ and titling by outlining the major DOs and DON'Ts of content curation for marketing.

Key recommendations to avoid problems include:

  • No reposting of full text articles
  • Curate from a varied pool of sources
  • Don't re-use full size images
  • Using no-follow tags
  • Using sub-domains

In the author own words: "Annotate curated content with your own insights, change titles, link to credible articles, publish from a variety of sources and ALWAYS give more than you take when it comes to third-party content."

Good advice for content marketers.  7/10

Guidelines for Content Curation Matching SEO Quality Standards by Bruce Clay

Guidelines for Content Curation Matching SEO Quality Standards by Bruce Clay | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
The quality of content is of utmost importance to ranking. Content curation with enhanced annotations offers a way to post quality content and save time.
Robin Good's insight:

Here is an interesting research article reporting on the SEO effectiveness of curated content, and of the type of curation that is most effective from this point of view.

Specifically, Virginia Nussey on BruceClay.com, wanted to find out if curated blog content could have the same SEO benefit as traditional blog content. To find out she run a specific test and measured the results.

Here the conclusions she arrived at after runing the test:

"When content curation comes in the form of original content, a website can achieve the benefits of fresh content without threat of negative search engine rankings.

The same ranking potential can be gained from curated content with editorialized curation in significantly less time when compared to a traditional blog post."

Key takeaways:

1. Text should be unique on the Web.

2. Sources linked to should be of high quality.

3. Add value to the collection, for instance through story-telling, new perspective or commentary.

Informative. Instructive. Useful. 8/10

How To Do News Curation Without Having Problems with Duplicate Content

How To Do News Curation Without Having Problems with Duplicate Content | Content Curation World | Scoop.it

Robin Good: If you have been resisting the idea of curating news content on your web site because you are afraid of being penalized for having "duplicate" content, this article will shed some light on what is best to do to avoid it.

By working with titles, writing intros and commentaries to curated posts, linking out to relevant and credible sources, you have many variables at your disposal to make curation work for you, rather than against you.

Just follow the good advice contained in this good article by Josh Cunningham (author of the WP-Drudge for link and news aggregation) and you will be OK. It's the same approach I use to curate all my news channels. It does work.

Informative. Useful. 8/10

Curation platforms vs Search engines

Curation platforms vs Search engines | Content Curation World | Scoop.it

This is an interesting comparison  and I think it's a good start....... search and curation continue to evolve and there's lots more to this story, stay tuned...........

Intro:

Curation platforms vs Search engines Nowadays, search engines like Google are essential tools for every Internet work. But are they the best place to search anything? We believe that a manual...

Search engines present a list of content, ranked by a relative relevance between the results. Curation platforms like Bundlr present themed groups of content, usually ranked by popularity, but always highlighting the author of the selection.

Search engines work better when:

We’re looking for definite answers The source long term authority matters The quantity of results is important

Curation platforms work better when:

Events are recent or on-going (and traditional sources are slow to catch up) There are multiple points of view Concrete example are prefered to definitions

The Six Pillars of SEO-Friendly Curated Content

The Six Pillars of SEO-Friendly Curated Content | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Content curation could be an extremely risky practice if you don't put a lot of effort in, or it lacks editorial voice or a distinctive point of view. After all, Google already has a curated list of content.
Robin Good's insight:

I really think that Eric Enge of SearchEngineWatch did not have to go out of his way to post such an excellent analysis of what traits curated content should have to be appreciated by Google.

But given the amount of content marketers adopting curation as the latest magic wand, his work provides a very useful warning for the many attempting to substitute curation for good quality content.

As in real-life, when it comes down to giving more exposure to different curators, both humans and Google will attempt to select those that:

1) put a lot of effort into their curation

2) have a strong editorial voice and

3) a distinctive point of view

and which heavily rely on:

4) recognized expert analysis7cmmentary and reviews

5) access to data otherwise not accessible

6) freshness

Rightful. Useful. 8/10

Content Curation on Social Media: An Introductory Guide

Content Curation on Social Media: An Introductory Guide | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Social content curation is an important building block of your inbound marketing strategy.
Robin Good's insight:

Gianluca Fiorelli does a good job, after his webinar last week, of reporting what are the key steps, resources and strategies to use to leverage the content curation approach for gaining visibility, followers and extra traffic across social media channels.

In this intro guide he addresses some of the basic questions received by webinar participants last week.

Some good resources for news discovery, but - in my opinion - too little in the way of good examples and what they are characterized by.

Useful as an intro guide for social media content marketers. 7/10
