How Blockchain is the Key to a Secure IoT | #CyberSecurity #InternetOfThings  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The solution for Smeets and his team though is not to pile on extra layers of authentication, but rather to distribute them. And that's where blockchain comes it. Because the blockchain functions via a distributed and encrypted ledger shared across all of a network's users and devices, it creates a network of authentication that is verifiable and not easily hacked.

With blockchain implemented, a device cannot access a network unless it is verified through the entire ledger. In this scenario attacks like Mirai become significantly more difficult, if not impossible, because a hacker would need to modify the entire ledger, and not just the credentials of any one device.

Ericcson Research demonstrated a proof-of-concept of this idea at the 2017 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this past March. The researchers set up a small WiFi network that used blockchain authentication instead of a typical username/password setup.

Industrie 4.0: Wie deutsche Unternehmen die digitale Transformation meistern wollen | #IoT #DigitalTransformation | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

The moral of the story is that when lives depend on fully automated systems, it's a good idea to keep an eye on those systems anyway. (And if that's not the moral of the story, it should have been.)

How do you use something that's fully automatic, anyway? What is the responsibility of the "user"? Can we just hand over control to the bots?

Recent events in the news suggest that when it comes to using our automatic products and features, some people are doing it wrong.

The first big Internet of Things security breach is just around the corner | #IoT #IoE #CyberSecurity #Awareness | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

There was a time when the only device you had connected to your network was a PC. Then laptops with a wireless connection came along -- then after that, smartphones and tablets.

But the connected revolution hasn't ended there. Gartner estimates that currently 5.5 million new 'things' -- devices from toasters and kettles to cars and hospital equipment -- are being connected to the internet every single day, and they will total 6.4 billion by the end of the year.

That figure is up from 3.8 billion in 2014, and 5 billion in 2015 and is expected to rise to over 20 billion Internet of Things (IoT) devices being connected to the web in 2020.

Quels risques de sécurité se cachent dans vos cadeaux de Noël cette année ? | Internet of Things | IoT | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

'Sometimes I'm terrified' of the Internet of Things, says father of the Internet | CyberSecurity

'Sometimes I'm terrified' of the Internet of Things, says father of the Internet | CyberSecurity | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Vint Cerf is known as a "father of the Internet," and like any good parent, he worries about his offspring -- most recently, the IoT.

"Sometimes I'm terrified by it," he said in a news briefing Monday at the Heidelberg Laureate Forum in Germany. "It's a combination of appliances and software, and I'm always nervous about software -- software has bugs."

The Internet of Things will offer the ability to manage many of the appliances we depend on, acknowledged Cerf, who won the Turing Award in 2004. With its ability to continuously monitor such devices, it also promises new insight into our use of resources, he said.

Devices such as Google's Nest thermostat, for instance, can "help me decide how well or poorly I've chosen my lifestyle to minimize cost and my use of resources -- it can be an important tool," he said.

As with so many technological tools, however, there are plenty of potential downsides. Safety is one of them.

Cerf is now vice president and chief Internet evangelist at Google, but you won't find him enjoying any of the massage chairs the company provides for its employees. "I know they're run by software -- I worry they will fold up on me," he quipped.

As more such appliances are run by software, people will be increasingly reliant on programmers' ability to write good code, he pointed out.

"It's fraught with issues, some technical and some legislative," he said. "Who is liable when an appliance doesn't work the way it should, and what if that's a software question?"

IoT: Don't Forget Privacy And Security While Racing To The Price Bottom | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
There is no doubt that companies of all shapes and sizes are increasing their spend in internet-of-things (IoT) technology. In fact, IDC projects this to be a $1.4 trillion market by 2021. With the increased spend and demand by consumers for low-price and high-value IoT devices, makers of these connected technologies have put a premium on affordability. The race to the bottom on price has inadvertently created major risks for organizations and consumers, according to PwC’s “Uncovering the Potential of the Internet of Things” report.

The pressure is on, and we see many makers of connected devices that produce IoT products as inexpensively as possible skipping important steps such as the design of security and privacy protections. This is generating significant new risks that are not widely understood during a time when consumers are more concerned about price than privacy and security. Risks include physical, software, encryption and network attacks, all of which could have wide-ranging effects on our daily lives, from taking over a connected car to obtaining sensitive data from a connected home to accessing a private network via a wearable device.

Also, there are societal concerns, including getting access to valuable intellectual property, sabotage to companies or governments and espionage. Consumer-focused companies need to ensure they are meeting their customers’ concerns. Simply put, the proper cybersecurity and privacy measures can aid businesses in seeing the full potential of IoT.

Smart Cities Make for Smart Economies | #Economy #ICT #IoT #IoE #InternetOfThings

Smart Cities Make for Smart Economies | #Economy #ICT #IoT #IoE #InternetOfThings  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Cities are undoubtedly getting larger, especially in developing countries. This increase in size accelerates the consumption of resources and adapting will no longer suffice, they must develop sustainable economic strategies. To achieve this, a strong investment in human capital, social capital, urbanism and ICT infrastructure must be made.

All over Europe start-ups are partnering up with governing bodies to innovate city infrastructure. Among others, this includes the smart use of data acquired by tech companies and by the government, improved mobility, energy efficiency and advanced connectivity, more commonly known as Internet of Things (IoT).

Towards a smarter economy

A smarter economy is a crucial aspect to the Smart City movement. The notion has a broad meaning however Smart Cities Berkeley break it down into three different components; how Smart Cities technologies are changing urban commerce, the Smart City as an economic driver and the economics behind Smart Cities.

There is a lot of buzz at the moment about digitalising our economy, starting with payments. A clear illustration is the recent emergence of bitcoin or more broadly, mobile payments and e-wallets. Furthermore, there is a rise in the use of QR code technology or NFC (near field communication) for point of sale transactions. Indeed, mobile payments are at the heart of improving areas such as mass customisation retail, personalised tourism, enhanced mobility as well as peer to peer interactions. The end-game is to have a solution which digitalises the entire customer experience seamlessly.

The Hierarchy of IoT “Thing” Needs | Internet of Things | CyberSecurity | Privacy

The Hierarchy of IoT “Thing” Needs | Internet of Things | CyberSecurity | Privacy | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

To define an IoT “Thing,” I’m going to employ Maslow’s hierarchy of needs — that well-known human psychology paradigm typically displayed in the shape of a pyramid, with the most fundamental human needs (physiological needs like air, food and water) at the bottom and rising to the most esoteric needs (self-actualization or expression of full potential) at the apex.

The reason to think this way is to enable the use of familiar paradigms when “Thing” architecture and interaction models are designed. For example, consider this simple question: “What should you consider when purchasing an IoT thing?” With this new thinking, the answer becomes: “The same stuff you consider when you hire a new employee.” Trustworthiness, reliability and ability to work well with others form a great basis for consideration in both cases.

7 reasons why IoT device hacks keep happening | Internet Of Things | CyberSecurity | Privacy | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Let’s skip the part where we talk about how many fancy IoT devices people will have in 5 years. We can also skip the part where we talk about the benefits of these devices.

Why is it that these connected devices are being hacked over and over again?

The list below, while not exhaustive, explains some of the reasons why these new connected devices are so easy to hack and why we’re likely to see more hacks in the future.

  1. MVP mindset
  2. Usability > security
  3. Lack of skills and resources
  4. Ship and forget mindset
  5. You (the user)
  6. Complex supply chain
  7. Cybercrime as a service

Why IoT Security Is So Critical | Internet of Things | CyberSecurity | Privacy

Why IoT Security Is So Critical | Internet of Things | CyberSecurity | Privacy | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Twenty years ago, if you told me my phone could be used to steal the password to my email account or to take a copy of my fingerprint data, I would’ve laughed at you and said you watch too much James Bond. But today, if you tell me that hackers with malicious intents can use my toaster to break into my Facebook account, I will panic and quickly pull the plug from the evil appliance.

What is evident is that the IoT will become an important part of our lives very soon, and its security is one of the major issues that must be addressed via active participation by the entire global tech community. Will we be able to harness this most-hyped, emerging technology that will undoubtedly revolutionize the world, or will we end up opening a Pandora’s Box that will spiral the world into a new age of mayhem and chaos? Let’s hope for the former.
