UB's Solar Power Project Completed

UB's Solar Power Project Completed | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The University of Belize's solar power project is completed, and is ready to start generating power.  Plus TV has a good article about the project, and interviewed one of the people that works with the project.  Solar power, what a great idea.

"The project was funded by the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency.  The power generated by the PV system will be sold to Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) and the gross proceeds from such sales will be transferred by way of a grant to UB.  Also, GOB will transfer the ownership and management of the PV system after a period of ten years to UB free of cost.  The equipment procured under the project will be maintained by the Ministry of Works and UB with necessary assistance from BEL and other related organizations.  The cost of the project is BZ$10 million.  Official handing over ceremony will be held next week Friday August the 24th at 10am."

Adventure with the Divaz

Adventure with the Divaz | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo Adventure Tours took 5 moms rock climbing, zip lining, and canoeing in Barton Creek Cave.  Plus TV's Divaz Next Door will be airing the adventure next week, but here's a preview.  Looks like they were in good hands with Teddy Waight, known for his tubing adventures in Bullet Tree Falls.

"Looking up, around and down into the water...pausing now and then to breathe in deeply and exhale slowly with my eyes closed to fully take in the moment and be grateful for the entire experience.  I couldn't keep my eyes closed for too long because I didn't want to miss a moment of this opportunity.  Quartz shimmering like diamonds as the 1000 candle lightbulbs bathed the rocks with illumination.  Our tour guide from Cayo Adventure, Teddy, was highly knowledgeable and he deftly guided us through the water with his expertise and his stories."

Ketterling College has 23 doctors and intern currently in Cayo, providing free consultations and treatment.  Plus TV interviewed Dr. Paula Reams from the group.

"Many years ago, we started it because the school that we are from is an Adventist College and we started a liaison with the Adventist hospital down here and it just kind of grew and we started to work more and more with other people in Belize and now we have gone all over the country, doing these health fairs, from Orange Walk to Punta Gorda.  We have a licensed eye doctor with us on this visit; we have students who are learning to be doctors, we have people who are nurses as well as nursing students and we have nurse practitioners with us on this trip.  We have such a good relationship with the Belizean people and we want to keep coming back.  Everyone helps us out and is so nice that we want to keep coming back."

“The Economic History of Belize” book launch

“The Economic History of Belize” book launch | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

"The Economic History of Belize," written by Barbara and Victoria Bulmer- Thomas, had its launch yesterday to coincide with Book Week.  Plus TV interviewed the president of the Belize Book Industry Association.  Happy Book Week!

"I believe it is an important book because it presents the economic history of Belize.  We always hear about the history of Belize, but we never see an economic view of the history of Belize, which takes into account everything that has happened in the context of history and geography and I think that’s why it is important.  It presents the facts eloquently and in a simple way, so it is a book that is accessible to students and to the general public."

Burns avenue excavation also mentioned on Plus TV

Burns avenue excavation also mentioned on Plus TV | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Plus TV interviews Dr. Jaime Awe about the dig.  "On Saturday, while an excavator was digging down Birds Avenue, as part of improving the infrastructure for drainages, they came across some broken ceramics. The Department of Archeology was then called and we got a team to come out here and since then we have found several ceramics vessels and also the remains of one adult male individual. The site is part of a small settlement that used to be a part of Cahal Pech and we know that this dates sometime before the birth of Jesus Christ."

Feelgood story of the day.  Training at risk youths and providing them valuable life skills is a win-win situation.  This is a great story from Plus TV about the Enter Change Workshop.

"It all got started three years ago when Terry Stinson and his wife came on a mission trip to Belize.  The couple returned to Belize a year later from their home back in Bristol Virginia and started an organization by the name of Enter Change Workshop.  Their vision behind the workshop is to train young men from within that community in a trade and sharing the love of God with them at the same time...  Since its inception; approximately 20-25 person have been trained and pass through Enter Change Workshop."

Rebecca Stirm Back to Boost Mission Catwalk

Rebecca Stirm Back to Boost Mission Catwalk | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Mission Catwalk needed a serious ratings boost, so they brought back Rebecca Stirm!  Stirm has won 4 of the competitions on the show, and by acting like they eliminated her, they set the stage for a totally scripted 'judges wild card.'  You can see tonight's episode at the UB auditorium tonight, courtesy of Plus TV and Divaz Next Door.

Good luck, Rebecca!  Goodbye, Mission Catwalk!

UB's Earth Day Fair on Plus TV

UB's Earth Day Fair on Plus TV | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Plus TV has a video from tUB's 6th annual Earth Day Fair.  Julian Cruz interviews Loretta Logan and a few students, and relates what she found out.

"The children and adults were also able to apply newly acquired knowledge in various games organized by UB students of the Natural Resource Management program.  Under the tent top we were given a quick lesson on endangered animal species found in our ecosystem and Belize’s efforts to preserve and assist in re-populating their natural habitats...  The mission of the University of Belize green energy advocates is ‘to foster knowledge on the use of alternative energy to old and young generation through community outreach.’  I would say they achieved that objective today."
