Belize Zoo Transformation Project

Feelgood news of the day.  The video about the Belize Zoo's journey to get handicap accessible is a great story.  They currently have a crowdfunding campaign going on right now on indiegogo.com.  If you'd like to donate: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/belize-zoo-accessibility-project

"Our story begins with a man named Jerome who had grown up at and loved The Belize Zoo.  While working, Jerome was injured, which eventually led to one of Jerome’s legs being partially amputated.  When he went to The Zoo to visit after his surgery, Jerome realized that he could not maneuver his wheelchair through the gravel pathways.  He could no longer access the place that meant so much to him.  So The Belize Zoo reached out to the Inclusive Recreation Resource Center at SUNY Cortland (IRRC) in the hopes that we would be able to help The Zoo create a more inclusive environment not only for Jerome but for all of The Zoo’s patrons.  A love affair was born. Working together to form The Belize Zoo Transformation Project, The Belize Zoo and the Inclusive Recreation Resource Center formulated a plan to not only make The Zoo more accessible but also to promote inclusion and accessibility in the US and Belize."

The Garifuna Collective on the Road | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Garifuna Collective is on their 2 month North American tour right now, and they have started an indiegogo campaign to help raise funds for their journey.  They have uploaded a video on the page from their rehearsal at the Soul Project here in Cayo.   They'll spend 55 days on the road, travel 18,450 miles, and will have had 275 Hotel rooms when it's all finished.

"We have embarked on a historic two month tour of North America performing at many prestigious music festivals and venues in Canada and the United States.  The tour includes some 25 cities such as Toronto, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vancouver, Chicago, Washington DC, Edmonton, Portland, Calgary, Minneapolis, Winnipeg and New York.  This tour coincides with the release of Ayo (Goodbye), our long anticipated album in honour of Belize's late cultural icon, Andy Palacio."

Lucky Boy Rocks

Lucky Boy Rocks | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The rescued jaguar, now named 'Lucky Boy,' is doing fine on his 13th day of recovery at the Belize Zoo.  He even has his own song, Lucky Boy Rocks, written by Sharon Matola herself, and she sings it to him.  There is a fundraising campaign on indiegogo to raise $15,000 to help with his veterinary care, since the zoo is funded solely by donations.  Help out if you can.

Garifuna Collective Returns Home

Garifuna Collective Returns Home | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Garifuna Collective has returned to Belize after their North American tour, where they impressed audiences all over Canada and the US.  They'll be playing around Belize after a break.  Welcome back!  The LA Times has a great article on them, which highlights their new album, Ayó.

"In his native Belize, Andy Palacio is frequently compared to another lion of Afro-Caribbean music, Bob Marley.  Like Marley, Palacio was an artistic pioneer and prophet of a musical genre shaped by the cross-currents of colonialism and slavery, yet characterized by the music's spirit of alternately joyous and plaintive resiliency.  And, like Marley, Palacio was cut down in his prime, at 47, in 2008, after suffering a series of small strokes.  His passing was a harsh blow for Garifuna music, a soulful blend of African percussion and elegant guitar-driven melodies."

Their indiegogo page is active for another 9 days: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-garifuna-collective-usa-and-canada-tour

Wildtracks Receives PACT Grant

Wildtracks Receives PACT Grant | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

PACT is helping Wildtracks build a primate nursery for monkeys like Izzie, who has been the focus of a few videos lately at the Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic.  The grant covers more than half of the projected costs.  Thanks, PACT!

If you would like to help them with the rest of the cost, they are on indiegogo.com.

http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/primate-nursery-care-unit

"One of Wildtracks’ goals is to build a primate nursery unit for the eight baby monkeys at the center.  Founders of Wildtracks, Paul and Zoe Walker, estimated the cost for the nursery at $18,500 Bze.  The Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) has eased Wildtracks’ burden by granting them a Support Grant of $10,000 Bze.  This grant received from PACT will now allow Wildtracks to commence construction on the much needed nursery."

Lucky Boy's Fund Raiser BBQ

Lucky Boy's Fund Raiser BBQ | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Feelgood news of the day.  The BBQ fund raiser for Lucky Boy, the jaguar rescued from the resort down south - which mysteriously burned to the ground last week - was fun and raised not only some much needed money, but raised awareness of Lucky Boy's plight.  He should be fine.  There are 5 days left to donate money online on indiegogo.

"Again, we all thank our Lucky Boy BBQ supporters for the splendid help on Saturday.  The future for Lucky Boy is a bright one, thanks to such a magnificent show of caring solidarity!"
