Belize Listed on Top 10 Greenest Places on Earth

Belize Listed on Top 10 Greenest Places on Earth | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Belize was mentioned on Travel & Leisure's Top 10 Greenest Places on Earth list.  They specifically mentioned the Maya Mountains.

"The Maya Mountains stretch 70 miles across southern Belize into Guatemala. This range is a stark change from the bright blues of Belize's coastline. Here in the Maya Mountains, thick jungles brim with unique adventures, from spotting wildlife like jaguars and tapirs to swimming beneath waterfalls or summiting Victoria Peak, the country's second-highest mountain. To fully embrace the country's mesmerizing green landscapes, book a room at the eco-chic Copal Tree Lodge, where nature is the main attraction. The property is tucked into 22,000 acres of lush jungle, with in-room bathtubs and showers that offer treetop (and howler monkey) views, not to mention a funicular to take you down to explore the Rio Grande.

Cayo Tops World's Best Budget Locations

Cayo Tops World's Best Budget Locations | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo was listed number 1 in a Huffington Post article about the best budget locations in the world.  The author has a lot of great things to say about Cayo and its residents.

"Warm and welcoming, independent and private. Those four perhaps seemingly contradictory adjectives best describe both Belizeans and their country.  Belize is also one of the safest countries in the world, despite what you may read about it...  However, I favor the interior Cayo region with its Mayan ruins, caves, rivers, waterfalls, and rain forest, a frontier where self-sufficient communities are emerging and attracting like-minded folks interested in being 'independent together,' as a friend living in this part of the world describes it.

Chaa Creek a 'Top Value Spa'

Chaa Creek a 'Top Value Spa' | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Not a month goes by where Chaa Creek isn't on a top 10 list.  This month they made gayot.com's list for 'Top Value Spas' and Fox News' list of 7 'stunning jungle and rainforest retreats.'

http://www.foxnews.com/travel/2013/04/11/7-stunning-jungle-and-rainforest-retreats/

"The Lodge at Chaa Creek prides itself on being a true eco lodge, 100 per cent devoted to green, sustainable tourism.  Set on 365 acres on a private nature reserve in Belize, the riverfront resort offers a vast menu of adventure travel packages at great rates.  After a day of spotting exotic animals, hiking along a medicinal plant trail, canoeing at sunset on the Macal River, horseback riding or rainforest ziplining, guests like to chill at the jungle bar or relax with luxurious spa treatments.  While the cost of a therapeutic massage is not cheap at $85 (or $70 for a custom facial), the environment is priceless: al fresco pampering with views of the rainforest, a musical backdrop of tropical birds and a spa that is decorated with fresh flowers every day."

"In a secluded corner of the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve lies this charming 20-lodge resort designed to slide you perfectly into the surrounding natural environment.  With a mix of rustic and amenity-filled cabins strewn along a waterfall-fueled river, the property is ideal for contemplating starry nights, relaxing in hammocks, exploring a vast realm of unspoilt nature and embracing the meaning of getting away"

There are a lot of must do's in downtown Cayo.  Here's a top ten list, without our suggestions to the author of 'Walking the Hawkesworth' and 'Hitting Midas' Pool' which should both be on there.  Mr. Greedy's, known for their amazing happy hour, and Meluchi's, famous for their Graveyard Lounge, are mentioned under Cayo Nightlife.  Iguanas - the picture is from the Green Iguana Conservation Project - milk shakes, and sweets are also highlighted.

ATM on The Creepiest Places list

ATM on The Creepiest Places list | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Actun Tunichil Muknal got on The Creepiest Places list this time.  It's the last entry in the article.

"They’ve found several skeletons in the cave, and most of them are, uh, small.  That is, most of the sacrificed were children.  They were probably sacrifices to Chaac, the Mayan god of rain, during a particularly severe drought.  But don’t worry — these kids didn’t have their hearts cut out while still alive or anything.  No, evidence shows that they were all killed by having their skulls crushed, which is way more genial and to the point.  They were dealing with children, after all.  Over hundreds of years, the bones became calcified and fused with the cave floor, which is why modern excavators have just left them there without a proper burial (though seriously guys, maybe like throw a tarp over them or something?).  The most famous skeleton in the cave is that of a teenage girl, nicknamed the Crystal Maiden because her bones have partially crystallized and now sparkle in the light."

San Ignacio once again made it on Tripadvisor's Top 10 Caribbean Destinations list!  Oddly, it's number 10, and not 1st place...next year.  The Green Iguana Conservation Project, located at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel tops the list of attractions in San Ignacio.  San Pedro was listed as 2nd place on the list.

"It’s true: parts of Belize are getting touristy.  But San Ignacio remains rustic, making it a great base for budget-friendly tropical adventure travel.  Canoe on the Macal River, or walk to Mayan ruins at Cahal Pech(just be warned: it's uphill)."

Belize was again ranked one of the world's happiest countries, this time by the Travel Channel.  Belize ranked 4th on their top 10 happiest countries.  Picture is the Five Sisters Falls, taken at Gaia Riverlodge.

"With the second biggest barrier reef in the world, a laidback Caribbean lifestyle and a favorable climate, there’s a lot to be happy about in Belize.  But its cultural diversity is what is truly believed to make this country so content and welcoming: European, Creole, Hispanic and Mayan are some of the prevalent groups that form one harmonious culture here. Belize on '10 Relaxing Solo Vacations' List

Belize on '10 Relaxing Solo Vacations' List | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Belize made it on another top 10 list, although this list proves that the makers of top 10 lists have run out of ideas.  Really, '10 Relaxing Solo Vacations For New Divorcees?'  And Belize isn't in South America!  Maybe the Huffington Post needs a new copy editor.  At least San Ignacio got some recognition.

"Like Costa Rica, Belize -- a South American travel destination that's recently become a trendy hub of sustainable tourism -- has a lot to offer the single traveler.  Belize boasts the beauty and tranquility of a tropical getaway without the crowds, couples and high cost.  Experience the local flavor by touring through Caye Caulker, San Pedro and San Ignacio, and make sure to schedule some R&R time at the country's stunning beaches and nature preserves.  If you're feeling daring, don't miss adventure activities like climbing ancient Mayan ruins and ziplining through the rainforest."

Actun Tunichil Muknal makes another top 10 list, this time it's on the 'eeriest' list.  They get the translation wrong - cave of the stone sepulchre - but it still sounds good.

"The Cave of the Crystal Sepulchre is found in Belize and houses the skeletal remains and archeological artefacts of the Maya.  The most fascinating resident is the Crystal Maiden – a young girl who was the victim of human sacrifice calcified bones glitter like crystal making her all the more spooky than your average skeleton."

Cayo just got mentioned in a couple of 'top' lists.  Joshua Berman has Cayo on his 'Top 5 places to watch it all go down' list, in honour of 2012.  He says that Cayo 'also boasts the best selection of jungle lodges anywhere in Central America, including many small, off-grid eco-resorts on the upper Macal,' and mentions the Lodge at Chaa Creek, and their special tours for 2012.  He then says that 'there is a large event planned for Dec. 21, 2012 at Xunantunich archaeological site, and special solstice camping permits are being issued at Caracol.'  http://www.salon.com/2012/06/12/end_of_the_world/singleton/

Travel Agent Central has Cayo's tree houses at number 6 of the top 10 Summer 2012 destinations.  They say that Belize is 'offering caving and kayaking, snorkeling and diving, tours of ancient ruins and zipline tours, naturalist eco tours, and journeys on horseback,' most of which are also in Cayo, and specifically mentions Caves Branch.

A growing number of lodges adhere to green values, offering nature adventures in a sustainable setting.  But you don’t have to rough it.  You’re not sleeping on a straw mat on a dirt floor.  There are opportunities to stay in very comfortable accommodations”
