In the last year, we’ve seen a rapid improvement in the abilities of generative AI. It can take millions of pieces of data and reconfigure them into billions of pieces of content. However, shortcomings with data validity, misinformation, and algorithmic bias have deterred some educators from considering it a reliable tool.
When writing my keynote, I wondered if understanding AI’s cognitive abilities could help advocate for its utility. A familiar framework came to mind: Bloom’s Taxonomy.
When I was a teacher, Bloom’s played an important role in lesson planning and assessing the competencies of my learners. Recent critics have appropriately recognized that these cognitive levels shouldn’t be stacked linearly, but should be more of a spiral that volleys between levels as learning is happening. Either way, it’s been the most accessible representation of learning in the last 70 years.

The appearance of a computer programme that can produce texts that could seemingly be written by a human has caused quite a stir, particularly in the education community. Early on, widely shared examples presented automatically produced essays that were (if not brilliant) good enough to pass some exams.

As a learning specialist who, along with supporting the students in my charge, works side by side with colleagues in all content areas, I want to encourage faculty as they consider the impacts of tools such as ChatGPT. For English and social studies teachers, for example, this just might be their “calculator moment”: As math teachers had to adapt their teaching when calculators became ubiquitous, so, too, must teachers of courses that are rich with reading and writing, now that AI tools are at students’ fingertips.

AI Text Classifier is a new tool from Open AI, the makers of ChatGPT, that will detect whether or not a passage of text has been written with ChatGPT and similar AI writing tools. To use AI Text Classifier you do need to have registered for a free account on Open AI. Once you have an account you can use AI Text Classifier. To use AI Text Classifier you simply have to paste a block of writing (at least 1,000 characters, roughly 175 words) into the text field and click the submit button. AI Text Classifier will then rank the writing as very unlikely, unlikely, unclear if it is, possibly, or likely written by AI. For the record, AI Text Classifier classified my article about detecting writing created by AI as very unlikely to have been written by AI.

Imagine a world where you could have a beachside conversation with your colleagues, take meeting notes while floating around a space station, or teleport from your office in London to New York, all without taking a step outside your front door. Feeling under pressure with too many meetings scheduled today? Then why not send your AI-enabled digital twin instead to take the load off your shoulders? These examples offer but a glimpse into the future vision of work promised by “the metaverse,” a term originally coined by author Neal Stephenson in 1992 to describe a future world of virtual reality. While defying precise definition, the metaverse is generally regarded as a network of 3-D virtual worlds where people can interact, do business, and forge social connections through their virtual “avatars.” Think about it as a virtual reality version of today’s internet.

A Melbourne school has launched a podcast to enhance its student voice and develop an array of communication and technical skills in a real-world setting.
The new podcast, called Beyond the Gates, also gives students access to external experts for inspiration and guidance as part of the project.
Podcasts have become increasingly popular during the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s Infinite Dial Australia study by Edison Research and Commercial Radio Australia found that 5.6 million Australians (26%) listen to podcasts on a weekly basis – up from 53% in 2020.
“Providing a vehicle for Korowa students to develop and apply vital collaborative, technical and communication related skills to influence others in a real-world application while gaining industry expertise is a priority,” Korowa Anglican Girls School deputy principal, Liana Gooch, told The Educator.

As organizations continue to adapt to and embrace new ways of working, IT teams are facing unexpected challenges. According to a new survey from Snow Software, the global leader in technology intelligence, 92% of IT leaders report their organizations were moving or had already moved to a hybrid work model. Yet only 34% said enabling the shift to hybrid work was their department’s primary focus over the next 12 months. The data suggests IT leaders may be underestimating the unique challenges of hybrid work, especially as their teams are already facing issues such as rising costs and insufficient security. The study surveyed more than 400 IT leaders from organizations with over 500 employees to determine the current state of hybrid work and hybrid technologies.

The recent revelations that ChatGPT can be used by students to write convincing essays and explanations is a frightening prospect for any teacher. With many exams and assignments now carried out online, there is ample opportunity for using AI writers.
While ChatGPT might seem at first glimpse like a gift to students, it is actually a sign that they need to up their game. Students will need to increase their synthesis of evidence, demonstrate critical thinking and show creativity just to stay ahead of AI during their studies and future employment.

All signs point to the fact that hybrid work is here to stay. That's because employers finally acknowledge that employees desire the best of both worlds and aren't willing to compromise. According to the 2021 Work Trend Index, over 70% of workers want flexible remote work options to continue, while over 65% crave more in-person time with their teammates. As a result, 66% of business leaders are preparing to redesign office spaces to better accommodate hybrid work environments.

Unlike traditional school projects that often take place at the end of a unit, project-based learning, or PBL, is an educational philosophy that calls upon students to take on a real-world question – such as how to best design a farm – and explore it over a period of weeks. Teachers incorporate grade-level instruction into the project, which is designed to meet academic goals and standards, and students learn content and skills while working collaboratively, thinking critically and often revising their work. At the end, that work is shared publicly. “Project-based learning is not the activity at the end, it’s the activity at the beginning that drives the learning and builds the engagement,” says Kristin De Vivo, executive director of Lucas Education Research, a division of the George Lucas Educational Foundation.

"Images speak louder than words. The communicative power of the visual is well documented in the communication literature. Our daily experience also attests to this fact. Visual cues draw our attention much more than the textual component. For us in education, images are an important part of our teaching toolkit. We use them for a wide variety of educational purposes and in different educational activities.
"There are several platforms where you can search for and access copyright-free images to use in your teaching. However, sometimes images are embedded in backgrounds that are not necessarily suitable for one's intended project. The ability to make images transparent and remove backgrounds from them is a key digital skill for teachers. Below are some of my favourite tools I use to remove backgrounds from images. Share with us if you have other suggestions to add to this list:"
