In a new study, researchers from The Scripps Research Institute and Duke University Medical Center reveal the three-dimensional structure of a crucial ion channel. Their findings shed light on the channel's possible role in immune functions such as detecting infection and inflammation.

The new study was published Jan. 18, 2016, in the journal Nature Structural and Molecular Biology. An Important Sensor Lander and his colleagues focused on an ion channel called the transient receptor potential vanilloid-2 (TRPV2), which resides within the membranes of cells throughout the body. Previous research had suggested TRPV2 was involved in sensing physical stresses, such as changes in pressure and temperature, as well as in detecting immune challenges and activating the immune system's T cells.

The gut mucosa is the largest and most dynamic immunological environment of the body. It's often the first point of pathogen exposure and many microbes use it as a beachhead into the rest of the body. The gut immune system therefore needs to be ready to respond to pathogens but at the same time it is constantly exposed to innocuous environmental antigens, food particles and commensal microflora which need to be tolerated. Misdirected immune responses to harmless antigens are the underlying cause of food allergies and debilitating conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease. This animation introduces the key cells and molecular players involved in gut immunohomeostasis and disease.

En marzo de 2015 la colección de Inmunopíldoras de la Universidad de Valladolid ha superado el medio millón de visitas. El equipo responsable del proyecto Inmunomedia 4.0 se siente muy agradecido por la acogida y sigue trabajando en nuevas entregas.

Cuando se comenzaron a grabar las primeras píldoras en julio de 2013 no imaginábamos la gran acogida que iban a tener. Más de medio millón de visitas, cientos de correos de agradecimientos de estudiantes de todo el mundo (no citaré paises por no dejarme ninguno fuera). Si resaltar que los países con más visitas son Colombia, México y España, pero con un grandísimo nivel de visitas de todos los paises de Iberoamérica. También en Europa tenemos alumnos estudiando con las inmunopíldoras. Estamos trabajando en el subtitulado al inglés y al francés, que en breve estarán disponibles para algunas entregas. Y por supuesto diseñando las nuevas grabaciones, si cabe con más ánimo y dedicación. Medio millón de gracias se quedarían cortas. El equipo de Inmunomedia4.0

Innate immunity is a semi-specific and widely distributed form of immunity, which represents the first line of defence against pathogens. This type of immunity is critical to maintain homeostasis and prevent microbe invasion, eliminating a great variety of pathogens and contributing with the activation of the adaptive immune response. The components of innate immunity include physical and chemical barriers, humoral and cell-mediated components, which are present in all jawed vertebrates. The understanding of innate defence mechanisms in non-mammalian vertebrates is the key to comprehend the general picture of vertebrate innate immunity and its evolutionary history. This is also essential for the identification of new molecules with applications in immunopharmacology and immunotherapy. In this review, we describe and discuss the main elements of vertebrate innate immunity, presenting core findings in this field and identifying areas that need further investigation.
