9 Tips for Teaching Coding in the Classroom

9 Tips for Teaching Coding in the Classroom | Strictly pedagogical | Scoop.it
As coding becomes an increasingly coveted skill, schools all over the world are deciding to teach their students how to code. This is a excellent idea, as having coding skills could pay huge dividends later on in life. However, pre-service teachers do not usually learn how to teach coding in their college teacher education programs. Many teachers have difficulty learning and then teaching coding skills to their students. In response, we decided to write an article that gives teachers some practical suggestions on how to teach coding in a classroom.

Get girls coding to change the world

The statistics are staggering. Just 24 percent of tech jobs are held by women. Roughly 74 percent of girls in middle school express an interest in STEM, but by the time they get to college, just 0.3 percent major in computer science. There will be 1.4 million new jobs in computer science by 2020, but only 3 percent will be filled by women.

Girls Who Code founder and CEO Reshma Saujani is on a mission to change that. In just five years, her organization has grown from 20 girls in New York City to 40,000 girls in all 50 states – four times the number of women who graduate with computer science degrees every year in the U.S.

“Every solution we want to find in the next 100 years will involve technology, and if you give girls entry, they won’t sit on the sidelines anymore.”

A passion for getting girls off the sidelines and into coding and computer science is behind everything Girls Who Code does through its 80 summer immersion programs and 1,000 clubs where girls learn coding, robotics, website development and app making. Because when you introduce girls to computer science (CS), they get it.|

But that introduction is a necessity.

"Online learning has come a long way in the last few years.Flickr/Laurie Sullivan

When I started learning to code, the options were limited—lots of books (not even e-books), some very basic online tutorials, and a whole lot of experimentation.

Online learning has come a long way in the last few years. There are interactive courses, tons of online tutorials, and one of my personal favorite ways to practice coding: games.

While a game alone probably isn’t going to teach you everything you need to know about coding, it can be a really incredible way to practice the skills you’re learning. It makes practice fun. And if you’re anything like me, you might suddenly realize you’ve spent the last four hours reinforcing your coding skills without even realizing it.

I’ve tried out some of the most entertaining and useful games for learning to code. Check out my favorites below. "
