LEBLOND's curator insight, October 24, 2017 9:46 AM

Four Types of Group Work Activities to Engage Students | Strictly pedagogical | Scoop.it

"Collaboration helps to develop many of the key skills that will be required of students for their future success. Students can develop many of these so-called “soft skills,” or Essential Employability Skills, by engaging in group work and other forms of collaboration (Ontario Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development 2005)."

The ABC's of Collaboration

The ABC's of Collaboration | Strictly pedagogical | Scoop.it

Via Beth Dichter
Beth Dichter's curator insight, July 13, 2014 8:08 PM

Dan Pontrefract has published a book called Flat Army: Creating a Connected and Engaged Organization. In this book he define collaboration as:

The unfettered allowance and encouragement of employees to both contribute and consume knowledge, insight or ideas with any direct relationship via professional or personal networks to achieve an outcome.

In addition to this definition he has created two infographics that look at the ABC's of Collaboration.

One infographic provides a key word for each letter of the alphabet as well as an image (as shown above). The second infographic also includes a definition for each word.

We know that collaboration is not always easy for students. The two versions available would be useful for different grade levels. In the younger grades students might share what they believe these words mean, or you may choose one or two key words to use for specific tasks. The version with definitions might be useful in promoting a dialogue with older students. Do  they agree with the definition? Is there a word that they think might better reflect collaboration that takes place in  a classroom?

Beth Dichter's curator insight, April 1, 2013 6:39 PM

Ross Parker has posted another infographic that ties into an earlier one (that looked at Style Comparison and was posted in this Scoop.it). This one looks at mindsets and how there are similarities today in the mindsets of teachers and students. He states "The two visualisations below are part of an ongoing attempt to define my views on education, and make these accessible to my students, fellow teachers, parents and leaders."

If you click through to the post you will also see the first infographic and you may download them in a variety of formats.

So true. I collaborate with four colleagues on our Humanities curriculum, a combined ELA and Ancient History class, and the growth in quality of the curriculum has been incredible. We have 3-4 hours per week of collaboration time, and we use that time fully. Collaboration is a force multiplier.

Coach Students Rather Than Teach Students

Coach Students Rather Than Teach Students | Strictly pedagogical | Scoop.it
David Ginsburg helps schools improve teaching and learning. Learn more about David's work, and connect with him through email and LinkedIn. Also, follow him on Twitter.

Letting students take more active roles in their learning doesn't mean teachers should take more passive roles. It means we should take new roles. We should assess students before assisting them. We should prepare for students' mistakes rather than try to prevent them. We should facilitate less whole-group instruction, and more whole-group discussion.

We should do what Yves Kabore has done to enable 6th graders to "fly through" material many 10th graders would find challenging: coach students rather than teach students.
