Find, Research, Cite, Link and Curate with the Excellent Google Research Tool

Find, Research, Cite, Link and Curate with the Excellent Google Research Tool | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Robin Good's insight:

Google Research is a little-known sidebar available inside Google Drive documents and presentations which allows you to do just-in-time Google searches and to easily curate relevant results, including images, videos, text excerpts, links with full automatic attribution references, into the document or presentation you are preparing.

The Google Research sidebar facility can be called at anytime up by simply going to the Tools menu and selecting "Research" or by selecting any word in your text and then typing Ctrl+Alt+Shft+I.

Once in view, the mini Google Research sidebar, is ready to search across not just the Google standard web results, including news, images, videos and Google Scholar databases, but is also able to instantly filter and sort for you relevant Quotes, Dictionary items, as well as stuff from your own Google Drive documents and tables.

To identify more rapidly relevant resources inside this search sidebar, Google offers the option to "preview" any result, by opening an additional sidebar showcasing a resized view of the web page in question).

Once identified a relevant resource you can either drag and drop it right into your open Google document / presentation (great for images which will also automatically credit)*, or "insert the resource as a link", or "cite" it (by being able to select between MLA; APA and Chicago citation formats).

I have found the Google Research Tool extremely useful, handy and simple to use. If you are researching, writing or curating any kind of article, presentation or report in Google Drive, I highly recommend you try it yourself and let me know what you think of it.

Free to use.

*I am not suggesting to freely re-use images of others simply because they are accessible via the Google Research Tool. Generally, It is not a good idea to re-use other people images without appropriate authorization from the author.

Curated Visual Storytelling with Brickflow

Curated Visual Storytelling with Brickflow | Content Curation World | Scoop.it

"Create curated social media slideshows in seconds with Brickflow."

Robin Good's insight:

Brickflow is a web app which allows you to easly collect content from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr and YouTube and to package it up in a visual tile grid that can be viewed as a slideshow and which can be easily published, shared and embedded on the web.

With Brickflow you can build a visua story either by collecting stories and resources using hashtags or by searching with the integrated facility across all the above listed social media and then dragging and dropping your selected items into your visual grid.

Brickflow works in a similar way as Storify, providing though a different visual publishing metaphor for its final output.

The final bundle looks like a visual grid of tiles, that can also be played as a presentation (also in full screen).

From the official website: "Brickflow is an app for making curated social media slideshows in seconds. Build memorable stories and collections with content from Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr and more. It’s just like playing with Legos. The result, a visual summary of a topic, can be embedded into any website or blog"

Here is one good example: http://brickflow.com/landing/project/51d356739f252#/51d356739f252

More inspiring examples: http://blog.brickflow.com/

My comment: Very useful to curate visual summaries of breaking news stories, events or to summarize key resources to explore on a specific topic. Easy to use. Provides opportunity to remix existing "flows" into new ones.

Clip Anything from the Web and Organize Into Collections with Memit (Web + iOS)

Robin Good's insight:

Memit is a content curation app that allows you to clip any web page (as is) text, image or video available online and to save it inside a collection.

Collections can be set to be private or public, and you can invite as many other people as you want to collaborate and contribute to it.

Individual items clipped can be commented, tagged and can be shared on your preferred social media channels. You can follow other Memit users and see their stream of clipped items just like similar tools do.

Each user gets a Profile Page showcasing his work and publicly saved items.

My comments: Good flexible clipper allows easy grabbing of what you are interested in and easy storing into your categories and tags. Good actegorization functions. Good for collaborative use around the collection of texts, excerpts or video clips. Not so great at collection display (only a linear, vertical list format is avaiable for now), publishing or exporting (no embed feature).

P.S.: If you have backed up your Clipboard.com collections, you can import them directly into Memit.

Interesting tool!

Jose Jordan's curator insight, July 2, 2013 1:38 PM

Curate Rich Visual Information Pages On Any Topic with Etceter

Curate Rich Visual Information Pages On Any Topic with Etceter | Content Curation World | Scoop.it

Robin Good's insight:

Etceter is a new content curation tool which allows you to create and arrange information pages on any topic, by bringing and organizing together web site links, video clips, images and/or original texts.

Any curated information page, containing as many media elements as you need, is called a Pill. You can group and assign different Pills (which are by themselves collections) to broader categories you define and which are called Boxes.

On Pills pages you have the option to organize contents into one, two or three columns and you can easily re-arrange items by simply dragging and dropping them into new positions.

Etceter Pills and individual media items can be easily shared on social media networks and are directly integrated with Facebook comments under each page.

Etceter also provides intelligible SEO-friendly URLs and personal profile pages, all relevant traits of a good curation tool.

My comment: Though Etceter looks still in early development (FAQ and other pages are still in Spanish + the Clipboard import feature does not work yet - no bookmarklet) the features and curation approach offered is interesting. In particular the nesting of media items into Pills and Boxes is quite valuable and the possibility to arrange individual items in any way desired is very useful. Video collections work particularly well as well as multimedia info pages on specific topics.

Free to use.

Search and Curate News Stories on Specific Topics with StoryCrawler

Search and Curate News Stories on Specific Topics with StoryCrawler | Content Curation World | Scoop.it

Robin Good: StoryCrawler is an upcoming news and content curation platform which allows you to easily track an unlimited number of topics / keywords and to curate selected ones for publication, both on the web, via RSS feed or email.

Selected news stories can be, tagged, categorized and fully edited in each and every aspect before being published.

Inside the Storycrawler backend, a curator can configure and save an unlimited number of persistent searches monitoring online mentions of events, people, brands inside specific types of content sources (e.g.: social media, news, blogs, etc.).

Storycrawler makes your curated news stream available as a RSS feed, as an embeddable javaScript or iFrame code snippet, besides publishing your content directly on your account pages and providing direct sharing options for Facebook and Twitter.

From my own limited experience in testing an "unofficial" early Beta version of Storycrawler, it looks like the basics features are all in place while the UI, usability and final output formatting options still having some work to do.

P.S.: The platform seems to be targeted at medium to large size, enterprise companies and does not provide for now indications of its pricing plans. You can contact a StoryCrawler representative here: http://www.storycrawler.com/contact/

Collect Any Type of Web Content Into Visual Collections with the New Bundlr

Collect Any Type of Web Content Into Visual Collections with the New Bundlr | Content Curation World | Scoop.it

From Journalism.co.uk: "The content curation website Bundlr has just announced a new version of its service which allows for embedding of content from a wide range of sources.

By partnering with Embedly the site now supports over 200 sources of content, including Storify, Pinterest and Amazon, for users to add to their bundles.

Embedly is the service that the new version of Twitter uses to embed photographs and articles in your Twitter stream and is used by a host of other sites such as Reddit and Bitly and comes as a WordPress plugin.

While Bundlr was originally seen as an alternative to sites like Storify, which can be used to create stories from curated links and content, Bundlr's focus is now on creating a top-level resource for curated content around a story or topic."

Create Curated Expert-Filtered Top Link Lists and Categorized "Best Of" Pages with ZEEF

Create Curated Expert-Filtered Top Link Lists and Categorized "Best Of" Pages with ZEEF | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Robin Good's insight:

Zeef is a new web service which allows you to create top link lists on any topic and to group them into useful resources pages.

Each Zeef page contains multiple link blocks, which you can edit and customize to cover different set of resources for your selected topic. Not only you can simply add a URL and have it instantly added to a link block, but you can also search Google inline, see all the relevant results, and flag all the relevant ones for instant import into any link block.

Link items can be easily dragged and dropped in different positions, and link blogs can be also be easily repositioned on the page in your preferred order.

Text blocks can also be created, to create information modules in which you provide textual information only.

These link lists can then be shared and embedded on other sites, and have been designed to behave in a fashion similar to Google AdSense ad blocks. More specifically: link block content would be triggered by the page context and link blocks can carry affiliate or commercial links.

Finally, a supercool feature allows you to import any web site site structure into Zeef, and to have it auto-organized into link blocks, which you can further edit and arrange as you wish. Powerful.

My comment: Useful tools need not be very complicated. Zeef is a very simple but extremely useful tool as it leverages true experts in competition among themselves (there can be more than one page and more than expert for any topic) and crowdsourced metrics (what people click on) to provide highly curated selections of the best resources on any possible topic.

Zeef is excellent for:

a) experts wanting to share and showcase their competence in specific sectors while providing a useful service

b) bloggers wanting to enrich the value of their content by providing contextually relevant top-ten link lists

c) companies / advertisers desiring to leverage this tool to provide a highly effective access map to their best content, offers, info and services. See: http://apple.zeef.com

d) affiliate marketers and affiliate networks desiring to select categories / lists of links rated by experts and wanting to place them on their pages

I highly recommend using Zeef to rapidly organize the best resources on any topic in an effective, useful fashion.

The only addition I'd make to Zeef, would be an optional description-opinion one-liner that an expert can associate to each link he provides. This short info, even within 144 characters, could provide a lot of additional value to the already useful link blocks.

I sincerely hope that the commercial / revenue-making component of Zeef doesn't corrupt on otherwise very promising tool.

Free to use.

Klaas Joosten's comment, September 22, 2013 4:33 PM
Hi, indeed this is a risk, we will offer this download this is very good feedback. But there are not many curated directories with a real business model. Because we are going to use the links blocks on external websites (blogs) like widgets and fill them with affiliate links we give people the opportunity to make money. Most curation websites don't have any way of monetizing their traffic. Our business model is based on a dutch competitor how does 20 million of revenue only in the dutch (Netherlands) market. So if people use your subject page to make their purchasing decision you have helped them and earn some money to keep the platform alive.

Gianfranco Marini's curator insight, November 4, 2013 1:06 PM

Capture Anything From The Web and Organize Into Visual Boards with Clipular

Robin Good's insight:

Clipular is Chrome browser extension and web app which is capable of capturing any text, web page, image, video, diagram or any other content you can see on a web page, wile indexing the text it contains and letting you organize it into public/private collections.

The Clipular capturing tool can capture full web pages, or any portion that you specify.

Captured content can be tagged (assigned to one or more categories), commented and easily shared on your preferred social media channels.

Clipular "boards" (collections) can be set to be private or can be publicly shared.

There is an import function to bring in your existing Clipboard.com collections. (Unfortunately, the display of web pages imported in this fashion is quite disappointing as they are forced to appear - even when clicked on - at a thumbnail size).

A unique organizational feature called "Group" lets you easily grab items from your dashboard and throw them easily into a new or existing collection.

A collection can be published / displayed in one of four different modes:

a) Magazine

b) Poster

c) Story

d) Pattern

My comment: This is an excellent content capturing and organization tool, meant for internal work and not for publishing collections to the public (at least for now). The capturing tool is extremely effective, and the organizational features also work very well. The display, in the main dashboard and the four display modes do have some margin of improvement. Good alternative to Pinterest when you need not so much to collect images, but rather web pages, text excerpts, video collections or other materials.

Curate Large Information Collections Into Navigable Presentation-Maps with Mindomo

Curate Large Information Collections Into Navigable Presentation-Maps with Mindomo | Content Curation World | Scoop.it

Robin Good: If you are looking for a content curation, mindmapping and presentation tool rolled into one, I strongly suggest you give a good road test to Mindomo.

I have been a passionate fan of mindmaps since 2007, and have created tons of them to curate my many collection of "best tools" in specific niches or learning maps on dedicated topics. You can see some of them here: http://www.mindmeister.com/users/channel/RobinGood

But with time, and the increased size of my collections, I have been searching for valid alternatives which provided greater speed, better ways to display and view the mapped info and more options to extract value from my collections.

Mindomo, which I have been heavy-testing for the last six-months, is my new reference tool not just for mindmapping but for a) curating large collections of information into a navigable cohesive whole, b) creating prezi-like presentations without needing to become an engineer.

Specifically, Mindomo integrates lots of unique and very valuable features to the basic mindmapping toolset, including:

- Capture content via browser bookmarklet

- Navigate and zoom in-out easily

- Search and embed video clips
- Search and embed images

- Search and embed audio clips

- Automatically credit all media sources utilized

- Customize look of maps in many ways

- Create presentations from your mindmaps

- Import and export to different formats + embed

- Works and syncs on iPad and Android

- Collaborative editing

- Cross-platform offline desktop app

- Custom URLs for your mindmaps

- just to name a few.

Here's a good example of what I have been able to "curate" with Mindomo:

1) http://bit.ly/ContentCurationUniverse

a very large collection of content curation tools

2) www.mindomo.com/mindmap/content-curation-for-education-98ccaad217074a07b9bff8b76effab8e

a navigable "presentation-map"

MindMeister and other mindmapping tools still provide good value, but in my humble opinion Mindomo, with its own limits and idiosyncracies, has earned my trust as being the most effective, powerful and feature-rich visual curation tool.

Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Robin, on the second map, I'm not able to see the whole map in one view - only each section .. is that a settings thing?

One thing I don't like about Prezi and the presentation in Mindomo is the zoom in and zoom out - it gives me vertigo .. maybe I'm just old school .. (LOL) .. but I imagine it gives you different transition effects.

(Thanks to Laura Brown and Alex Briscese for bringing this valuable plugin to my attention)

You're welcome. Thanks for the credit/ linkback. If you run the Link Library plugin http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/link-library/ (which doesn't come with WordPress) you can also run a bookmarklet which lets you add new links in this same, quick way. Not everyone does much with the blogroll or links now. But I still use mine. Link Library also lets you set up your links like a web directory. Though you do have a lot of background work to do for setting it up. It may not be for anyone who wants something fast and easy. But, it is a free plugin and you could just use it for adding links.
Laura Brown's comment, April 24, 2012 2:03 PM
I don't know if any of the tutorials mention this...

Once you have your PressThis loaded on your bookmark bar you can right click it and select Properties. Then change the name the button shows to anything you like. This is great if you have more than one blog you want to send content to. It helps to know which blog is which.
Robin Good's comment, April 26, 2012 5:53 AM
Thanks a lot Laura for tis additional info about Link Library and the tips on personalizing the PressThis bookmarklet.

Much appreciated indeed!
