Curation is a hot topic and it's a topic that is being enthusiastically adopted by many in social media -- so much so that curation and social media seem to be beginning to be used interchangeably.

Take a look at this post on the BBC College of Journalism blog:Social media: what's the difference between curation and journalism?

Lifting Conversion Through Curation and Badging

Lifting Conversion Through Curation and Badging | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
It's time to add "curation" and "badging" to the list of words and phrases that marketers have coined or converted in recent years. That list includes everything from evangelist to long tail, fat head, and socializing.

If you're into conversion rate optimization you may want to start sprinkling curation and badging into your pitches because it's definitely going to have a positive impact on conversion rates. Allow me to elaborate.

News Curation on Tablets: Thoora is Here

News Curation on Tablets: Thoora is Here | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Founded in 2008, Thoora is a new service that helps people find, curate, and publish beautiful, naturally search-friendly, self-updating content on the web.

Thoora was created after founders Chul Lee, Kyu Lee and Byron Ma realized there wasn't a service to effectively aggregate traditional and social media content into a single source.

The Thoora engine was based on this premise, and has been refined over the last two years to take that idea a step further: to not just aggregate content, but to discover, rate and deliver the highest-quality, most trusted and relevant content.

Thoora explores the entire blogosphere, Twitter, Facebook, other social media apps, and thousands of traditional media sources; and then uses over 100 signals to filter, rank, and deliver that content to our users for their curation.

Thoora’s secret sauce is its unique combination of human and machine. While our aggregation algorithms deliver quality content, we then put our users in the driver’s seat, giving them the tools to refine, re-order, re-rank, and prioritize the content.

4 Curation Lessons From Jim Louderback

4 Curation Lessons From Jim Louderback | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
According to a number of predictors, and my friends, 2011 is going to be the year of curated video.

The old, algorithmic approach is out, and instead we’ll see audiences flocking to videos selected for your viewing pleasure by friends (in the case of Facebook) and experts (maybe even from YouTube).

Yes, it looks like "curation" is bound to be the first big buzzword of 2011. But when it comes to video, before there was curation there was programming.

The kind that big network honchos would do.

Content Curation: A Rising Tide for Marketing and Beyond

Much like social media was touted as the “next big thing” for marketers to embrace during the end of the last decade, content curation is now emerging as the new next big thing for 2011 and beyond.

The term may be new to many, but evidence of its use is available all around us, as consumers and marketers alike try to tame the flood of digital information in today’s world: The Drudge Report and The Huffington Post, many of the industry insight newsletters you likely receive in your inbox, and even your retweets on Twitter.

In looking at these examples, most people are surprised—in a good way—to realize that content curation isn’t as complicated or overwhelming as they thought.

In fact, it’s really just a formal name for a process many of us do on a daily basis: identify, organize and share the best and most relevant online content on a specific topic with an audience of stakeholders.

Embed Facebook Updates or Tweets in Your Content with SocialDitto

Embed Facebook Updates or Tweets in Your Content with SocialDitto | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Last month, we introduced a tool called SocialDitto. The idea was to offer a tool that would do for Facebook posts what Blackbird Pie did for Tweets. It simply lets you embed posts into articles, blog posts, or any webpage.

Now, SocialDitto works for both Facebook posts and Twitter tweets, so content producers, bloggers, and journalists can do either with one tool (with more services to be supported in the future).

There are plenty of cases when such a tool can be useful. I’m sure you’ve seen plenty of Tweets embedded in news articles. You’ve likely also seen screenshots of noteworthy Facebook posts.

With SocialDitto, you can simply paste the URL of the post/tweet into the box, and get embed code, which will produce a box containing the post, with clickable links and all. It’s quite convenient.

Content Curation versus Content Creation

As many of us know, in the social media marketing game content is king! Without anything to Tweet about or post about on Facebook our communities would fall by the wayside and our customers would stop listening to us. For most brands, the first question that must be answered before starting a social media strategy is “Where do we find good content to post about?”

New Aggregation and Curation Models

New Aggregation and Curation Models | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Consumers, publishers and developers are looking at new models for aggregating, curating and delivering content on the web and on mobile devices, blending editorial (human) curation with algorithmic and social recommendations.

On the web, we’ve seen the rise of RSS, Twitter and Tumblr for aggregating content in an individual way (i.e., users seek out and select their sources), while more formal aggregators such as Techmeme and Mediagazer let third-party editors do it for them.

How To Use Twitter to Curate Social Media: Andy Carvin “Real-Time Wire Service”

My March 2011 video clip of the month is a PBS News Hour interview of Andy Carvin, (@acarvin), National Public Radio’s social media guru, on how he used Twitter to curate social media to turn himself into a “real time wire service” for the protests in Egypt and Tunisia.

I chose the video because Carvin’s work curating the news provides a hint of what news and information management can look like in an increasingly networked world.

From a cubicle in Washington, D.C., Carvin has been able to create a close proximity to situational awareness, giving his readers an incredible perspective, with pictures, video, and translations coming in real time.

He managed regularly to beat major news outlets on news events by keeping up with the flow of information on Twitter and knowing who’s behind what tweet.

Reflections on Curation

Reflections on Curation | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Hi everyone! I have some thoughts on all this curation and Google algorithm stuff and I did a video and text for your convenience. Let me do some text first though that may not have been in the video I made.

I’ve heard a TON about “curation” lately and the Huffington Post site sale and Google’s new algorithm. Now at first, being sick and all my head was swimming with confusion. Many of you get confused about stuff and you don’t want to feel stupid asking about it.

What's next after Google? Curation? Future of Journalism

What's next after Google? Curation? Future of Journalism | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
InfectiousGreed :: Google's ranking algorithm, like any trading algorithm, has lost its alpha.

It no longer has lists to draw and, on its own, it no longer generates the same outperformance in part because it is reverse-engineered, well-understood and operating in an adaptive content landscape.

There are two things that can happen now, e.g. we could head back to curation, which is what Paul Kedrosky sees happening, and watch new algorithms emerge on top of that next-generation curation again.

Think of Twitter as a new stab at curation, but there are plenty of other examples.

The final set of businesses for discussion in this post could be grouped together under the title of personal curation.

Curation of content as a topic is not new in itself and methods of crowd curation or folksonomies have been utilized in services like Digg and the handy “people who bought this also bought this” feature in Amazon for some time.

Today businesses go one step further and leverage the power of social networks together with readily available personal data and smart algorithms in order to come up with personalized suggestions for each user.
