Rescue from the Digital Tsunami

Rescue from the Digital Tsunami | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about content curation – ways to corral the rushing river of media coming at all of us. Because we are all drowning in too much information.

Information is a fire hose blasting at us full bore. If it’s not email, it’s Facebook. Blogs. White papers, professional journals and newsletters. RSS feeds and search alerts. Some of it we read, most of it we just don’t have time for.

It’s just crazy. New resources, new services, and even new data-stream-tamers are popping up every day. It can be overwhelming just deciding which filter to use.

Rohit Bhargava: Why The Future Of Travel & Destination Marketing Is All About Curation

Rohit Bhargava: Why The Future Of Travel & Destination Marketing Is All About Curation | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Today content curation is rapidly finding roots in the highly immersive world of travel as more people share their personal experiences as a way to influence others on not only where to stay and what to do ... but also where to go in the first place.

The Bottom Line: Curation is already transforming the way that people answer the all important question of where to go, but so far innovations are coming more from technology based startups rather than destinations themselves. In the near future, we will start to see more local, state and country tourism boards as well as convention and visitor bureaus using curation to better promote their destinations to all kinds of travelers.

How To Organize Your Twitter Favorites [VIDEO]

How To Organize Your Twitter Favorites [VIDEO] | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Favoriting is a ubiquitous Twitter feature that lets you flag a tweet as being something worth saving. But it’s just one raw chronological stream. That makes it almost impossible to find and share those awesome pieces of content that you saved a week ago – a month ago – a year ago.

What we need is a way to organize our favorites, the same way we organize our bookmarks when we save an interesting link. Delicious.com has been doing this forever with regular links, but it’s a social media world now – that’s where we find cool content, and that’s where we need to save it!

Curation is a Means to an End, Not the Objective

Curation is a Means to an End, Not the Objective | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Any hype period has its share of buzzwords. Curation is one of those buzzwords today. It’s probably one of the most used, misused and abused words when it comes to discussing the future of news and digital content.

The flurry of curation platforms has amplified the attention on the act of curation itself. But curation is only a means to an end, and not the end itself. It has to serve a purpose, and it has to be surrounded by a lot of peripheral value. If you see curation as the main thing, this novelty will wear off, and you’ll soon be wondering why so much time was spent on it.

Curation with a purpose and benefits is a powerful catalyst to engaging users around your content. And for journalists, it can augment their side of the story.

The Curator of the Revolution: Andy Carvin

Andy Carvin, a senior strategist at NPR (and formerly with PBS, the Benton Foundation, and founder of the Digital Divide Network), has been around the social media world for a long time as a blogger and commentor. He's also been liveblogging and tweeting major events for years.

Since January, however, he's taken his tweeting to the next level. With only a few hours here and there for sleep breaks, Carvin's twitter feed has been a flowing stream of news, editorials, translated tweets, rumor crushing information, and an amazing amount of converged information coming out of Egypt.

His 20,000+ followers include not only normal people but also news organizations and policy makers.

This is not within his official role at NPR, although the organization has been supportive of his efforts.

His curation of the news might be the future of journalism (according to The Atlantic).

How does he keep track of all the information?

News Radars: Target Practice for Web Curators | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Content is no longer king. At least that’s what I read in the news paupers.

There is no longer a premium on being the first to know. The future lies in being the first to understand in a way that draws others to that same understanding and their own conclusions. That’s the manifesto for curators.

With the advent of social networks and Web authoring tools, companies and brands have found ways to circumvent the traditional media spend and instead engage in product placement, branded integrations, brand underwriting content, content syndication, and sponsored communities. Since we now experience more branded content rather than brand-sponsored content, what will the future look like? Two trends emerge. Content Curation Strategy: How To Curate Content For Your Brand

Content Curation Strategy: How To Curate Content For Your Brand | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Content curation is such a hot topic these days – I included it in my Five Social Media Trends for 2011 and many others did too.

It’s in every single conversation I have with new clients, and it seems to take up a lot of headspace for current clients as well.

And I find myself trading curation tools, techniques and ideas with my social media colleagues all the time.

So as a followup to my earlier post on the topic, which was primarily focused on content curation for Twitter, here is my latest thinking on how brands can curate content to enhance their social media streams, broaden their reach, and generate community engagement.

It’s important to note that while I primarily refer to Twitter here, I’m interested in and often recommend content curation across multiple social platforms.

Facebook is equally important, but good content curation methods could also help with blog or Posterous/Tumblr writing (selecting links to include, writing roundup posts on topics) or feed email newsletters or even print newsletters.

Real-Time News Curation: Cadmus Offers Algorithmic Twitter Feed Curation

Real-Time News Curation: Cadmus Offers Algorithmic Twitter Feed Curation | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Filtering, curation, aggregation and relevance have long been touted as the next important steps for social media. In actual fact we’ve had curation services in the form of Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon, Delicious and many more for a long time. However, the questions “How do I find the blog post, tweet, facebook update, photo or check-in that is most relevant to me?” and “How do I know I’ve not missed a really important piece of news?” are still asked daily. So, there still isn’t a definite answer – or a definitive service. Cadmus started off as a “real-time filtering service” for a product called ViewPoint, but has grown into a self-standing application and the Cadmus API can help users and developers answer these questions.

Apple Launches Subscriptions For Content-Publishers On The App Store

As we heard at the Daily's launch a few weeks ago, Apple was planning to launch a new subscriptions model for content-publishers on the App Store. And today, Apple is officially announcing the new service for magazines, newspapers, video, music and more on the App Store.

Here's the revenue breakdown: When Apple brings a new subscriber to the app, Apple earns a 30 percent share; when the publisher brings an existing or new subscriber to the app, the publisher keeps 100 percent and Apple earns nothing. We've pasted the release below.

The News Personalization Trend: Washington Post, Yahoo and AOL are next

As Mashable reported, The Washington Post announced it is to launch Trove, an aggregator news site which enables users to get personalized news streams based on their personal choice and interests. The site is currently in private beta and is expected to be launched in March, the article said.

The Washington Post is only the latest in a growing list of news organizations who have created a personalised news consumption channel.
Yahoo! has recently announced the launch of "Livestand from Yahoo!", a digital newsstand and personalization platform which will deliver in a tablet-friendly format, news based on Yahoo content as well as from other publishers.

Realtime News Curation: The Eqentia Streams

Realtime News Curation: The Eqentia Streams | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
When it comes to realtime news, the prevailing wisdom these days is to let your friends tell you what to read through Twitter or Facebook.

Instead of editors, people are using these social stream sto filter their news, and a whole bunch of apps (like Flipboard) are tapping into that to present your social news feed in more appealing ways.

But a Toronto startup called Eqentia is approaching the problem from a different angle. It indexes 100,000 articles a day across blogs and news sites, puts them through a semantic engine to categorize them into every topic imaginable, and only then does it look at how much social attention each article is getting. Social comes last, not first.

What you get is a personal news page organized by topics and sub-topics that you want to follow (business, technology, iPad news, mobile web, cloud computing). Headlines can be sorted by time, social attention, or preferred sources. Eqentia is designed to create a competitive intelligence dashboard were you can create essentially an alerts page for specialized news about any micro-topic, but these also roll up into broader topics.

Each topic page shows recent tweets about that topic in a sidebar widget. The news search is also pretty powerful because of all the implicit categorization and content mining that Eqentia does.

Curation: Web Sites That Collect Stuff So You Don’t Have To

Curation: Web Sites That Collect Stuff So You Don’t Have To | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Since January 2004, when this column first appeared, the American consumer zeitgeist has evolved. Some argue, in fact, that a decisive change has occurred, and that a result of the wrenching economic downturn is that we just don’t care about stuff anymore. I suspect this conclusion is rash. There are, however, interesting traces in the culture that suggest somewhat more subtle shifts — attempts, perhaps, to reconcile the more virtuously possession-resistant stance that some now strike with the stubborn reality that, ultimately, people really like stuff.

This past Tuesday, the team from Echo held a press conference in San Francisco at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) where they announced something new to help create better engagement.

They called it e2 and it’s their new real-time stream server that’s designed to “make it easier for developers to build powerful real-time apps.”

No longer a commenting system like you would enjoy with Disqus or Livefyre, judging from the announcement made this week, the company has slightly pivoted to being a content curation company that will take the conversations you’re having on the Internet and placing it right in your very own website.

The web is massive. There are so many places to find information about everything under the sun. Google helps for sure, but even still, wading through all that information can be a daunting task. I was given links to reviews, lowest prices, forum links, videos – all of varying quality and knowledge. It took me almost an hour to find exactly what I needed.

I think it is always a good idea to look from the consumer’s perspective and answer the questions what drives the strategy. I’ve been browsing through my daily reads and thinking why I am reading the stuff I am reading and I came up with a very simple answer: I am reading someone’s posts because:

The content adds knowledge (adds value) or entertains me;

The content is supplied by trusted source;

The content is accessible to me.

Adding value and the art of Curating
In order to add value the content strategist has to think like a scientist:
