You land in a country that is recovering from a long war. The infrastructure is limited, but there is a nascent democratic government.

To make up for the lack of infrastructure, citizens use text messages sent to a central receiver or Twitter feeds to let government officials know what they need.

I’m describing E-Democracy, and using a platform like Swiftriver, these text messages and Tweets can be organized by time and geographic location.

It provides information to elected leaders, while starting a public record of citizen-government interaction. Since the Swift platform can handle data streams ranging from RSS feeds to the inflow of discrete numeric data, it’s an excellent platform for governance and peacekeeping professionals to use in their field work.

Technology News: Tech Buzz: Road to Curation Nation a Bumpy One | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Last week, media giants including the Associated Press, The Washington Post, and Dow Jones sent a cease-and-desist letter targeting the iPad app Zite, which aggregates news based on a user's Twitter and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Reader activity. It may not be legal or fair for apps like Zite to collect content and present it absent the originator's advertisements, but many observers argue that this is where the industry is headed, whether anyone likes it or not.

Marketer, Media or Museum? The Content Curator | Social Media Today | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
I just read a blog post by Joe Pulizzi at Junta42 Content Marketing about content curation. It got me thinking. His claim – first articulated by Rohit Bhargava in 2009 — is that, as more companies develop a content marketing strategy, a new role is emerging for a content curator, defined as:

Someone whose job it is not to create more content, but to make sense of all the content that others are creating. To find the best and most relevant content and bring it forward.

mbedding a Keepstream collection widget into your blog is pretty consistent from one platform to another, with one big exception being Tumblr.

This post will show you how to embed the widget into a self-hosted WordPress.org blog, but the steps will be almost exactly the same for other blog sites. The key is to make sure you are pasting it while in HTML mode.

Who Curates the Real-Time Web?

Who Curates the Real-Time Web? | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
SXSW was the source of a flood of real-time information on the web. Information flowed from attendees using social media tools to share what was being discussed, their thoughts and their experiences. This information was amplified further by the information be re-shared (retweeted on Twitter) and by other opinions being expressed about all things SXSW. But how is it that you ensure you don’t miss an important piece of information from within your social media connections or even outside of your normal social media circles?

VCs Looking For "Curation" Startups - Is A Curation Bubble Forming? - SVW | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
As the subject of curation takes off VCs are funding more "curation" startups which could likely lead to a bubble in this sector.

VCs are beginning to talk publicly about "curation" which means they are telling startups what type of companies they are looking to fund in the hopes that someone will create those companies.

For example, Fred Wilson, the New York-based VC recently wrote about curation:

I'm a big fan of curation in these services. Twitter has lists. Etsy has favorites. Tumblr has tag pages. These are all variations of curation in services that have a lot of noise in them.

Despite Charlie Sheen's 3 million Twitter followers or Lady Gaga's 9 million, celebrities aren't the real power tweeters.

Of the 190 million users on Twitter, only 20,000 of them—less than 0.05 percent—create roughly half of what's consumed on the micro-blogging site, according to a recent report.

These highly influential tweeters, or "elite" members, are in part comprised of celebrities in the traditional sense, but they also include bloggers, authors, journalists, and subject matter experts.

Content Curation Grows Up, Original Content Still Key

Content Curation Grows Up, Original Content Still Key | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
I first heard the term content curation in this post by Rohit Bhargava back in 2009.

Rohit positioned that, as more corporations and individuals create content, the role of the content curator is needed. Rohit describes this position as:

Someone whose job it is not to create more content, but to make sense of all the content that others are creating. To find the best and most relevant content and bring it forward.

As we fast forward to 2011, content curation techniques are now a key part of content marketing itself. Actually, it's always been an important part, but we are just now defining it as content curation.

Curation is a Means to an End, Not the Objective | Eqentia | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Any hype period has its share of buzzwords. Curation is one of those buzzwords today. It’s probably one of the most used, misused and abused words when it comes to discussing the future of news and digital content.

The flurry of curation platforms has amplified the attention on the act of curation itself. But curation is only a means to an end, and not the end itself.

It has to serve a purpose, and it has to be surrounded by a lot of peripheral value. If you see curation as the main thing, this novelty will wear off, and you’ll soon be wondering why so much time was spent on it.

Our Lives Are Digital Curation Tools | Memeburn

Our Lives Are Digital Curation Tools | Memeburn | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
As our lives become increasingly digital curation tools can provide a good way to document our activities, capturing a snapshot of key events and moments.
For example, the South by South West Interactive conference that took place in Austin, Texas attracted a lot of people, sharing lots of ideas, conversations, product launches, and more.
Take at look at MobyNow’s real-time aggregation of all the social media at SXSW and you’ll see what I mean, the masses of tweets, photos, etc. And that’s what aggregation is good at — finding everything that’s relevant or related is easy.
But aggregation isn’t that great at documenting a unique experience of an event such as SXSW in digital form. That’s where curation steps in, it can make sense of a mass of information in a useable format.

Mark Cuban on Curation and 4 Great Curated Content Examples

We largely invest in consumer web services with a large number of engaged users where the users create the content. Services like this can become messy and hard to navigate. There is always a signal to noise issue.

I'm a big fan of curation in these services. Twitter has lists. Etsy has favorites. Tumblr has tag pages. These are all variations of curation in services that have a lot of noise in them.

Recently Kickstarter launched their own version of curation called Curated Pages. In the Kickstarter model, "Curated Pages are a way for organizations, institutions, and (soon) individuals to share projects they love on Kickstarter."

Here are some of my favorite Curated Pages:

Where To Find Great Online Video

Where To Find Great Online Video | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Here at Mashable, we’re big fans of web video, and we’re not alone. People spend more and more time online watching (and many times, rewatching) video content, both user-generated and commercial.

Even five years ago, during the early days of startups like YouTube and Blip.tv, sifting through content to find the best the web had to offer could be difficult. After all, with 24 hours of video uploaded every minute just to YouTube, there’s a lot of content out there.

In today’s landscape, where we have not only a plethora of user-generated content, but also mounds of new and catalog content from commercial publishers, finding the best in online video can take a lot of time and effort. After all, for every “David After Dentist,” there are a thousand other videos of children that are neither as cute nor as doped up on novocaine.

Fortunately, more and more sites and services are stepping up to help sift through the vast, expansive wasteland of online video. Here are five of our favorite sites for not just finding the goods, but also making it easy to share and exchange videos with friends and family members.

Consuming News in the Age of Curation » TNW Social Media | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
There is a lot of noise online at the moment and finding good content is tough. We all have about 3 or 4 sites where we stop to reade news and entertainment every day but increasingly our media consumption is coming to us via curated sources like our own personal networks.

There has been a huge shift from the old model where “gatekeepers” dictated what content we consumed and how we accessed it a new model in which curation plays the primary roll. Caught in the cross hairs are the old media institutions, but as consumers we are winning because not only do we have access to larger amounts of content in real time but the smart people are curating it through a variety of sources to match their needs and they are doing so largely for free. So what role is curation playing and what are the implications for the media world at large?

We’re still very much open, and the site has been having a much needed nip and tuck. It’s a case of “ we love you black background, bright colours and retro navigation bar, but you’re not giving us what we need any more. It’s not you, it’s us (sob.)”

In recent months, we’ve been hearing growing rumors about YouTube adding more curation and original content, and now sources are saying that the video site plans to add “channels” to make itself more viable for Internet-connected TVs.

The Wall Street Journal cites “people familiar with the matter” as saying that parent company Google is planning on altering YouTube’s homepage to focus on subjects such as arts and sports. It plans to add 20 premium channels that would have five to 10 hours of professional programming per week. Other channels would feature current YouTube content (here’s hoping for the “cats running into mirrors” channel).

Content Curation – How To Quickly Add Value As Information Marketers | The Ad Master - Advertise Everywhere | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Content curation, a term that gained popularity in 2010, is the art of culling relevant, valuable and useful information from the vast ocean of data, and presenting it in a cohesive, interesting and comprehensive style that gives a ‘big picture’ view of a specific niche topic.

No longer can anyone claim that they can peruse and make sense of all the content that exists (and is being constantly added) on even a very narrow range of subjects. 47 million websites were added in 2009 and an estimated 550 billion documents exist online today.

The role of a content curator was first proposed around 2004, when the catchy term ‘Newsmastering’ was introduced by Robin Good of MasterNewMedia.com to describe a dedicated content analyst who would gather, collate and categorize content from various sources and compile it for consumption by those who are interested.

The 5 Models Of Content Curation: Rohit Bhargava - Influential Marketing Blog | Content Curation World | Scoop.it
Curation has always been an underrated form of creation. The Getty Center in Los Angeles is one of the most frequently visited museums in America - and started as a private art collection from one man (J. Paul Getty) who had a passion for art.

Aside from a few well known examples like this one, however, the term curation has rarely been used outside of the world of art ... until now.

One of the hottest trends in social media right now is content curation - thanks in no small part to the leading efforts of several thought leaders actively promoting the idea.

Joe Pulizzi is a "content marketing evangelist" who speaks and writes often about content marketing publishes a list of the best content marketing blogs across the web.

Steve Rosenbaum just published a book called Curation Nation looking at the rise of content curation in the business world - and a recent post on the Psychology Today blog even declared that "content curation is the new black."

As a person who consumes dozens, if not hundreds, of articles on the web each and every day, it's easy to remember that I'm an extreme outlier. Most people would prefer to read only a few articles a day — only the ones that they know are worth their time.

That's what Summify does in a nutshell. They survey the content on the web and condense it into the articles that will interest you the most.

Today marks the formal launch of Summify. After a few months in beta testing, they believe their social algorithms are ready for the world to try. And they also have a fresh round of funding to further spread the service.

At this year’s South By Southwest (SXSW) Interactive festival, content curation — the process of finding, organizing and sharing online content — was the new hot topic in panel sessions, on blogs and on the show floor, as marketers clamored for ideas about how to harness the overflow of information available on the Internet.

Results from a survey released today from content marketing software company HiveFire prove that content curation will remain critical long after SXSW, with over two-thirds of marketers reporting that this strategy will be more important a year from now than it is today.

Those who are unfamiliar with the term, it is process with which the information we uptake relies on what is shared on our social networks. (Currently an official definition does not exist, but I am sure we will see its definition grace the pages of Wikipedia by the end of the year.)

That’s because search and visualization algorithms embody human judgement about what is important to know. I’ve been pointing this out for years, and it seems particularly relevant to the journalism profession today as it grapples with the digital medium. It’s this observation which is the bridge between the front page and the search results page, and it suggests a new generation of digital news products that are far more useful than just online translations of a
